Text Review Roundup: My Little Pony: The Movie (part 1)

Come on, I could hardly not do a TRR for this, could I? Unsurprisingly, there are a lot more review sources than for show episodes, so I have had to pick and choose a little bit. I'm prioritising freely accessible, non-paywalled sites, but I am not giving priority to those reviewers who happen to agree with me. This is intended to be a reasonable cross-section. Also, the amount of syndication in US movie reviewing is ridiculous.

As a large number of these are professional reviews, there have been many more text-based reviews than we get for an episode – a YouTube video just won't cut it if you're writing for a national publication. So it's a long list – seriously, a long list! Off we go, then. As it's inevitably very spoilery, I'm using a page break – come past the cut for the reviews!

Note: I will probably do a separate TRR at some point for reviews from British sources, and maybe even another for text-based reviews of the movie from within the fandom.

The All State – very negative ("Everything about the plot is very rushed and lackluster ... nothing about this movie reflects [the show's] genuine quality ... a disappointment to the source material")

Alternate Ending – mixed (2.5/5; "a conspicuous stylistic monstrosity [but] I admire the film's color palette ... it is too damn long ... A better toy commercial than any given Transformers picture, but still.")

  1. I'll be posting my review after everything in Season 7, and ranking it from worst to best. Hopefully I'll see the movie before this awesome month (for me at least) ends...

  2. The San Francisco Chronicle's review blurb is baffling to me. Looks like the cable network cartoon? I'm sure there is plenty to criticize in the film, but it very clearly DOES NOT look like the show. I mean, it's the same characters in the same places, but the art style is very different. Why bring that up? It definitely makes me question the reviewer's merit if they can't take a side by side of the show and the movie and clearly see that it has a different art style. It wouldn't be a big deal, except that the review themselves brought it up. Strange choice... I mean, unless they really can't tell the difference.

    1. There are some very weird comments in a few of the reviews; I just haven't quoted them as they don't give an idea of the reviewer's overall opinion. One I can remember is a writer who said Rainbow Dash was male, and another who referred to a song that wasn't actually in the film at all.

  3. I feel bad for some of the reviewers I've seen who didn't like the movie, they've actually been harassed by rabid fans of it (even a former fan was harassed and being called a "loser", that told me a lot).

I am planning to see it, but I do not have high hopes myself. I do not like the animation, to me, the film's animation (quality) is not as amazing as people claim it to be. It is a step down from the series. The shading looks like crap, the 2D and 3D do not blend well and the latter looks like Playstation One/N64 rendered graphics, (I heard they did it in 3D and animated 2D over it or something), and the cardinal sin: the frame rate flip flops back and forth from being fluid/smooth to (most of the time) very laggy and stiff like a video game, most of the movements look sloppily, cheaply and amateurishly done, and it was outsourced also, guess they blew their obviously very low budget on certain scenes and had to spend less on others), red flag usually, and at one point, when Pinkie surfaces from the water saying "She's gone!" her mane is still dry, when even the show made sure it was wet when she'd resurface. The trailers were OK but I didn't really laugh at it, and from what I know of the story...well I'll link a review when I'm done seeing it, I'm waiting until it's on DVD and borrowing it from the library, I didn't go to the theaters. I'm still going to see it, but it's probably going to be the last FiM thing for me...

I also tell Movie Deputy (if I could) the original Care Bears movie is better, sure it had its flaws (animation errors, some muddled plot points) but it still had a good, simple story (sometimes simple is best), charming characters, good songs, good/nice art (though they weren't sweating bullets to make sure it looked Disney or Don Bluth good) and animation, good messages, and I felt I was watching a 75 minute Care Bears adventure.
