Follow-up to yesterday's, and my last post on AI for some time

I made a post yesterday on the future of AI in the fandom, and it brought quite a few reactions. One of the first was from Aragón, who it seems to some extent got the wrong end of the stick and inferred that I approved of what I thought the near future would bring. I don't. His misinterpretation is my fault for not writing the post better, not his. A few other people have weighed in with their own thoughts, and I'm more than happy for other people to continue to do so if they wish.

I will make it clear, though, that for as long as it remains practically possible for me to do so, I will be refusing to review AI-generated ponyfic. The reviewing policy I set out a year and a half ago still stands: if I review a fic and later discover it was made by AI, its rating will be changed to zero. I support the Fimfiction requirement that stories are written by humans. (I think being written by ponies is also acceptable, fortunately.)

But although I expect to be writing about AI stuff again in the future, unless there's some big development that I really can't ignore I won't be writing about it again here for quite some time. You need have no fear that Louder Yay is going to turn into one of those sites where the owner spends his entire time banging on and on and on about the same subject, wondering why the world is not grasping the incontrovertible fact that He Is Right.

And now it's time to move on. Ponyfic Roundup and Sounds of 2015 updates are in the works for the coming week. Happy New Year, everycreature!

Brave new world?

Edited to add, 2 Jan 2025: For clarity, I do not like the way I think things may be going. This isn't a post saying "Hey guys, we should all stop worrying about this!" It's a rather poorly written post, and that's on me. I'll probably delete it eventually, but I don't want to do so now and pretend I hadn't written it. So it stays up for a bit.

The other day, Equestria Daily ran an editorial/discussion post entitled "What Should EQD Do About AI Art Once It's Indistinguishable?"  and after that brought a large reaction, Sethisto made a further post called "AI Art Filtering On EQD - A Followup".

It made interesting reading. The comments, though... they were a sometimes interesting, occasionally enlightening, but often frustrating read. For a start, some commenters entirely ignored the point behind the initial post: that AI art is not like it was even a year or two ago. While it still makes mistakes, with careful prompting for simple images at least some of those mistakes are now similar to those that human artists make. In other words, if you ban AI images on such grounds, the risk of false positives is pretty high.

Then there's the old chestnut that "AI art is soulless". Meaning what, exactly? Do you think deeply about the human artist behind the picture of flying Scootaloo you just grabbed from Derpibooru? Do you? For every single one of the 6,000 images in your Scootaloo folder? I'm afraid the first response that comes to mind there is "Yeah, right." In many, many cases what consumers think about is the picture itself. Not the human being who made it. I'm afraid I think at least some of this is artists trying to kid themselves into feeling better.

What about the charge that AI just steals artists' work without compensation or permission? Well, let me answer that with a question of my own. Do you get formal permission and pay licensing fees for the pictures of Rainbow Dash you sell online and at conventions? Why don't you? The easy, tempting answer of "Because screw corporations" doesn't really get anyone anywhere, especially as you are probably perfectly happy to go out and buy a bunch of plastic toy ponies and thereby enrich... corporations.

There are a number of people in the EQD comments complaining very stridently that even calling AI images "art" is disgusting and that their creators should be called "plagiarism machines" or some such. All I can say is, good luck with that. The really hard fact, the one you don't want to face, is that the large majority of consumers of your MLP fanart do not give a damn about you as a creator. If they treated every picture with love and respect and deep contemplation, they wouldn't have amassed thousands upon thousands and stuffed them in a PC or cloud folder.

All this applies just the same to us ponyfic writers as well, by the way. If there was a ponyfic out there as satisfying to read as the best of Cold in Gardez or horizon or Cynewulf but the product of an AI large language model, how many of its readers do you think would downvote¹ it purely for where it came from? I'll tell you: a damn sight fewer than already downvote every M/M shipping story, regardless of its literary quality. Most fans would lap it up.
¹ Or the equivalent. I'm assuming here the presence of a host site that did not ban AI-created works.

I think part of the problem here is the same one we see in wider social media: a relatively small number of very vocal people see others of like mind around them and misinterpret this as meaning that most people in general actively agree with them. The EQD comments are the same: most people who collect loads of pictures of Applejack or whoever never go near EQD, and certainly never go to the trouble of creating a Disqus account and actually commenting on posts.

We often congratulate ourselves in this fandom about how creative we are, and to an extent I think that's justified. 150,000 fanfics of a kids' cartoon about magical talking horses is a remarkable achievement. Nevertheless, the majority of people are fairly passive consumers. Most of us creators are a lot of the time, too. And most people are not like the ones who hammer out screeds every time an AI post turns up insisting that AI art has absolutely no worth.

I remember a book I read years ago, a book of imagined letters to and from great figures of history. There's one addressed to William Caxton from an abbot complaining about how Caxton's newfangled printing press is ruining the job prospects of the monkish calligraphers at the monastery. And how much did this stop the, well, soulless printing press displacing the monks in the end? Not at all. As I've said before, AI art is out of the bottle and it's not going back in. However much you complain, however justifiable you feel those complaints, it's still not going back in.

I do think that there will always be a place for human art, and that there will always be people who do care enough to want it. As a music industry analogy, these are the people who expend time and energy on attending live gigs. They're admirable people and musicians love them. But ever since the advent of recorded sound, they have never been the largest group. They'll be the equivalent of the people who go to conventions and commission art. Most people, though, will grab gratefully at that flawed but adorable picture of Apple Bloom created by AICaPone or whatever.

tl;dr? Creators can say "Keep AI out!" as much as they want. The fandom, as a group, isn't likely to listen.

(AI) Okay, that one's really quite striking

This is from Gemini, Google's AI – the one that was called Bard in earlier versions. I neglected to save the actual picture, so the best I can do is the above screenshot. Clicking the pic will give you a much better quality version. The prompt I provided cuts off just before the end, so for that reason and for clarity, here it is in full:

Draw a recruiting poster for the Wonderbolts, featuring Rainbow Dash performing aerobatics. Use a very exciting and dramatic style, and use an unusual camera angle. Do not feature any machinery.

That last bit was because an earlier attempt gave me Rainbow flying a plane. Off lighting and somewhat clichéd look notwithstanding, this one's much more suitable – and if only Gemini could spell "Wonderbolts" it could have been better still!

Gemini writes ponyfic

Kind of prompted by iisaw's recent blog post, it's AI ponyfic time again! A new challenger has entered the fray. Well, not new as it's been around for a while now, but Google's Gemini hasn't been featured in this series before. I've kept the same prompt from last time, though with a slight addition at the end:

Please write a My Little Pony story (with a suitable title) in which Fluttershy and Rarity discuss a sensitive issue over a cup of tea. The two ponies are very long-standing friends and trust each other completely. Both of them are quiet conversationalists, so the conversation should have a restrained emotional tone. However, the much brasher Rainbow Dash barges into the cottage halfway through. Please remember that readers will already be very familiar with these characters, and so don't need reminders of their basic personalities.

Past the page break for the story – and it's one of the odder entries. There's some interesting stuff here, and Gemini has handled a few elements quite well compared with most if not all of its predecessors. It even came up with a title that wasn't in the usual tedious "A Delicate Conversation" line. However, it has a bad case of ellipsis addiction, and more seriously it completely failed to include a rather significant part of the prompt...

Claude 3 Sonnet writes more (and better?) ponyfic

Don't worry, this isn't going to take over the blog! I won't be writing about AI things on here for a while now. I was, however, interested to see that a slight tweak to the prompt gave what I think is a more interesting attempt at ponyfic (albeit still with a hopeless title). This time I allowed Claude 3 Sonnet to use up two responses to write its story, prompting it with "More" to get the second one. This time the prompt was:

Please write a My Little Pony story (with a suitable title) in which Fluttershy and Rarity discuss a sensitive issue over a cup of tea. The two ponies are very long-standing friends and trust each other completely. Both of them are quiet conversationalists, so the conversation should have a restrained emotional tone. However, the much brasher Rainbow Dash barges into the cottage halfway through. The audience is very familiar with the characters already.

I think adding that last sentence has helped, but see what you think. Beyond the break, AI adventurers!

Claude 3 Sonnet writes ponyfic

It's time for more adventures with AI! In the past I've asked an earlier version of ChatGPT, then GPT-4 and Claude+, then finally Bing Chat, to produce a short MLP fanfic based on a moderately simple prompt written by me. I feel freer to experiment with this stuff here than on Fimfiction, given the latter's strict rule (which I support) that stories posted there have to be written by humans. I find it interesting, though, and since I have this blog I shall use it!

This time around I'm sticking with Anthropic's Claude series, but using the more advanced Claude 3 Sonnet model. This is not the top version of Claude, but it is the top version available (albeit for a limited number of messages) without the need for a subscription. Much as this stuff interests me, it doesn't interest me enough to pay £18 a month for!

The prompt is as before, with a single note added in brackets to remind the AI to include a title:

Please write a My Little Pony story (with a suitable title) in which Fluttershy and Rarity discuss a sensitive issue over a cup of tea. The two ponies are very long-standing friends and trust each other completely. Both of them are quiet conversationalists, so the conversation should have a restrained emotional tone. However, the much brasher Rainbow Dash barges into the cottage halfway through.

I'll put the result after the cut. I was amused to see that these things are still pretty damn useless at titles!

Bing Chat writes ponyfic

It would be interesting if someone produced a writing-centric AI whose learning material was entirely out-of-copyright work. In the UK at least, that would still allow the likes of Orwell and Wells. I wonder if anyone's done it? Anyway, some months ago, I posted about what happened when I asked GPT-4 and Claude+ to write ponyfic based on a prompt I'd thought up. Yesterday, I thought I'd give the same task to Bing Chat. I told it to be creative in its writing style and then offered the same prompt I'd given before, to wit:

Please write a My Little Pony story in which Fluttershy and Rarity discuss a sensitive issue over a cup of tea. The two ponies are very long-standing friends and trust each other completely. Both of them are quiet conversationalists, so the conversation should have a restrained emotional tone. However, the much brasher Rainbow Dash barges into the cottage halfway through.

Beyond the page break you can see what Bing Chat came up with. As usual in my experience of AI writing, it's useless at titles, but oh well. I recommend you read right to the end, though, as there's a fun twist waiting!

Sethisto's EQD editorial on AI art

This turned out to be a very interesting read, which is why I'm writing about it here, albeit saddled with a ridiculously long headline, to wit: The Huge Struggle of Pony Posting in an Era of AI Art, Policing Fake "Artists", and Dealing With the POWER of DALL-E 3. Aaaand breathe. What's particularly interesting about the article is that it recognises just how much AI art has changed in the last year, showing some really quite startling examples. If you remember the Twilight Pokéball stuff from 2022, that's totally old hat now.

As Seth says, it's no longer possible just to assume that AI-created pieces will all have an instantly recognisable style or sheen to them. That was true in 2022: it isn't (at least, isn't necessarily) true any more. Many of the kinds of silly little mistakes it still produces are a) often skimmed over by viewers, and b) also quite often produced by human artists. Plus, as he also says, dishonesty exists in this fandom too: he says there's an AI-created piece posing as a human-created one in his inbox as he types.

The comments section on the EQD post is better than I'd expected too, with many posters coming to the conclusion that the time when you could realistically say, "AI must be kept out of art, full stop" might well already be over. As one person points out, Adobe is powering ahead with AI-enabling Photoshop, and it's not going to be the only graphics software package to do that. I assume, then, that soon just about everyone making computer art will be using AI somewhere along the way unless they put considerable effort into not doing so.

I'm too unwell still to add much of my own, but I did want to flag up the EQD piece as being something worth your time to read.

Quick update on review/rating policy

I'm sure most people who use Fimfiction (which is probably most people reading this blog) have by now have seen Wanderer D's post on AI. Without going too much into the specific issues raised there or in the big comments thread (since much of it has done what big comments threads usually do...) I do want to make a clear ruling with regard to Ponyfic Roundup, seeing as that's my decision to make. So:

  • I will not review any fic published on Fimfiction that appears to break the "no AI-written fics" rule.
  • If I read and review a fic, then later discover it breaks the AI rule, its rating will be rescinded and replaced with a zero-star rating.
  • Stories you wrote to an AI-supplied prompt are still eligible. I don't see those as different from entries for a prompt-based contest.

There is one specific exemption, for Greenhorne's fic ChatGPT in Equestria: A Digital Adventure (PR 425). As you'll see from my review, I was well aware of what I was doing. [First time for everything! —Ed.] As such, although the fic itself has now gone from Fimfiction, it can keep its two-star rating.

Otherwise? If you write a story yourself, the lowest rating you can get from me is a one. If you pretend to write one when you got AI to do it, and I later find out about it, the highest rating you can get from me is a zero. Do, as they say, the maths.

Sure, I am interested in the use of AI in writing. I've posted the results of my playing around with it on here a few times, and I will doubtless do so again. But there's a place for that, and said place is not in a Fimfiction story.

Ponyfic writing is a bit like sport. To jump off a comment someone (I think Sir Mediocre) made in the Fimfiction site thread, if you turn up at the Derby on a Ducati and do the course in 45 seconds, don't try to tell me it should count because tech moves on.

I hope that's all clear! Pester me in the comments if it isn't.

GPT-4 and Claude+ write ponyfic

It seems that if you log into Poe.com, you get one free query to each of the new GPT-4 and Claude+ engines in each calendar day. Given the vital importance of Pony, I chose to use today's free query to re-run the test I gave ChatGPT in December. I used exactly the same prompt as I did then, so you can compare the outputs of each model.

Prompt: Please write a My Little Pony story in which Fluttershy and Rarity discuss a sensitive issue over a cup of tea. The two ponies are very long-standing friends and trust each other completely. Both of them are quiet conversationalists, so the conversation should have a restrained emotional tone. However, the much brasher Rainbow Dash barges into the cottage halfway through.

Sorry everyone, fanfic's over now, the AI has spoken

Me: If Applejack and Rainbow Dash got married, what would happen?

ChatGPT: It is not appropriate to speculate on the actions or relationships of fictional characters.

Well, blast it.

An AI-generated story

I can't imagine I'm the only person in the fandom who's been playing around with ChatGPT recently. While it still has a lot of limitations, it is now closer to the point where I think some serious debates will need to be held about how much it should be acceptable to use it when writing stories. However much a slice of Twitter wants it to, AI in the creative arts isn't going to just stop. Sooner or later we're likely to reach a point where a blanket ban is going to be about as sensible as telling maths students they are on no account to use calculators.¹ Perhaps even more so for fanfic, where we already did not ourselves create large portions of the world and its characters.
¹ Yes, I know that did happen. That's the point

This isn't to say that "Assistant" (ChatGPT's persona) is currently capable of writing a high-quality ponyfic. It really isn't anywhere near that level, and not all of that is because the body of text it's been trained on is more than a bit shaky when it comes to more than quite superficial details of Equestrian society. (One highlight was telling me that Flurry Heart was the daughter of Twilight and Cadance...) At the moment it's an interesting toy, but it's one that keeps that interest going, at least for me, a lot longer than Eliza did all those years ago. So, just for fun, after the cut you can see what Assistant came up with for me. The title is also its own work.

My prompt: Please write a My Little Pony story in which Fluttershy and Rarity discuss a sensitive issue over a cup of tea. The two ponies are very long-standing friends and trust each other completely. Both of them are quiet conversationalists, so the conversation should have a restrained emotional tone. However, the much brasher Rainbow Dash barges into the cottage halfway through.

Presented without comment

Without editing either, other than the bold bits.

Me: Discuss the theory that Friendship is Magic declined in quality in the last few years of its run.

ChatGPT: There are several theories as to why Friendship is Magic may have declined in quality in the last few years of its run.

One theory is that the show became too formulaic and predictable. Many fans felt that the episodes were starting to feel repetitive and lacked the originality and creativity of earlier seasons.

Another theory is that the show began to focus too much on the main characters and neglected the development of the supporting cast. Many fans felt that the show had become too centered around Twilight Sparkle and her friends, and that other characters were not given enough attention or depth.

A third theory is that the show lost its connection to its core themes and values. Some fans felt that the show had strayed too far from its messages about friendship and acceptance, and had become too focused on action and adventure.

Overall, it is likely that a combination of these factors contributed to the decline in quality of Friendship is Magic in its later years.
