Twilight (Micro-series #1) news

A couple of related things to report this time around: first, Comic Book Resources has this interview with Thom Zahler, who's going to write and draw the first of the Micro-Series comics in the IDW line, focusing on Twilight Sparkle. It's nothing too deep, but it's a good read and makes me feel that Zahler knows what the fans want. A shame in a way that we didn't see that Mars Attacks crossover come to fruition, though!

Second, The Round Stable has posted previews of the first few pages of Zahler's comic. (Actually they're from iTunes, but TRS's are easier to read.) I'm not sure what to make of them, to be honest. On first look, I don't like the artistic style as much as Andy Price's — it seems simpler and more like what you'd expect a "kids' comic" to look like — and I'm not convinced by the repeated use of Twilight's full name.

Still, there's not enough in the preview really to judge how good the writing is, and that's obviously of immense importance. I shall certainly be buying the Twilight comic, and of course reviewing it here, but it's going to have to be incredible to match up to the Cook/Price masterpiece currently unfolding in the main series. Naturally, I would love it to be that good!

  1. Well that certainly sounds promising. Something like a spotlight series could go either way. I don't know if any of the other characters will appear even briefly (apart from Celestia and Spike of course, who are in those preview pictures) so it'll be interesting to see how they handle such a story, for each character.

Judging from those previews though, the art looks competent enough, if a bit too much like the original cartoon. (No bad thing, but Mr Price tended to go with his own style which was a fair bit different to the cartoon, and it worked all the better for being different.) Still, we'll only really know once we have the entire issue to look through, and if the writing is strong enough, it will help the artwork along too.

I do very much like that cover though - the second image along on that preview page - where she's casting some sort of pretty powerful spell. Very dramatic cover!

    1. Yes, I like that cover as well. I think it comes out on 20 Feb (eek, next week!) though IDW's been chopping and changing so much that it wouldn't at all surprise me if it turned out to be the 27th instead...

    2. Hmmm... I've seen on UKoE that it is indeed the 27th. Though IDW's schedule being what it is, who knows any more?

    3. Well, we can but hope. I know Andy Price has been particularly miffed that every issue has been delayed so far. Hopefully that's not going to keep happening with every issue, but if the Spotlights are now going to end up delayed as well, it's not exactly helpful!
