Sounds of 2014, nos. 70 to 66

After a little bit of a break, it's time for me to return to the 2014 Equestrian Trot 100 chart, which we're now about a third of the way through. Remember, this covers what was popular in 2014, so some songs included will have been released earlier. Also remember, I have four criteria for a track's inclusion:

Rule 1: Still available in the same or (1b) similar form direct from the/an original artist.
Rule 2: Available from a third party, with reason to believe the artist is fine with this.
Rule 3: So famous that it would be plain silly to leave it out.
Rule 4: Being unlisted is not, on its own, grounds for exclusion.

As happened last time, there is one track that is being skipped as it doesn't meet any of the aforementioned criteria. That still leaves us with four, though! Here's the list for today's edition:

70: WoodenToaster & The Living Tombstone ft. Rina-Chan – Lost on the Moon
69: Sim Gretina ft. Kathy-chan – Daring Do
68: Feather – Leaving Colours

67: skipped
66: Foozogz – Together

Past the jump break, you'll find YouTube embeds of the included songs, together with my rambly waffling. Off we go!

A really durable song here, one that's quite well known even now, a dozen years after its release. Perhaps unsurprising given the heavyweight combo of WoodenToaster (aka Glaze), The Living Tombstone and singer Rina-Chan who made it. Excellent beats, excellent melody and (if you don't mind a little voice distortion) excellent singing go together to make a memorably catchy song about... well, apparently not Luna, but perhaps other ponies who were banished to the Moon. I don't know. Oddly, the only place I can find where this is officially up in better-than-YT quality is Glaze's Soundcloud.

Sim Gretina hasn't been active in MLP fandom for years now, but is still widely remembered and appreciated. Perhaps mostly for remixes of show songs, but there were also a number of official tracks, of which this is among the most distinctive. I mean, how much samba is there in our fandom? On this hugely appealing showing, there should be more! Kathy-chan's vocals complement the sunny rhythm perfectly, so much so that I was surprised not to see any other Pony stuff on her YouTube. The lyrics are nicely done, too, using the theme of a chapter book – bear in mind that at this point, "Daring Don't" had not yet aired and so we didn't know Daring was real. Sadly I don't know of any official HQ upload, not least because Sim Gretina's Bandcamp has been emptied entirely.

And yes, there is a U in "Colours" there. Huzzah for Australian musicians! Also huzzah for any chance to hear said Aussie Feather sing; it's no secret she's among my favourite female vocalists from the Pony music scene. As should be pretty easy to work out, this is a song about Rainbow Dash. It occurred to me as I was listening that there's relatively little mainstream modern pop in the fandom, but this song fits into that genre very nicely indeed. I doubt it would shock anyone to hear this on the radio, especially given the lack of obvious pony words. You can pick up the HQ version for $1 on Feather's Bandcamp.

67: skipped

Yet another appearance in this chart for the hugely popular Foozogz, this time with a lovely – yet perhaps unjustly slightly forgotten – track blending samples of many official songs from 2013-14, starting with "Let the Rainbow Remind You". The whole lot celebrates the friendship and, well, togetherness of our favourite G4 ponies (and humans, given the EqG element). It's warming, it's encouraging, it's perfectly in tune with what Friendship is Magic is all about. The track is name-your-price on Foozogz' Bandcamp.

  1. Leaving Colours is amazing, I am once again awed by how far down the list some of these songs appear! Then again, 2013 was like, peak brony music, so maybe it's just that there were 100 really freaking good songs that year and something has to be number 68.

Lost on the Moon is likewise a banger. :D

    1. "Lost on the Moon" was the one I knew best of these. Completely agree with your assessment of it!
