Sounds of 2015, nos. 25 to 21

It's time for another look at what was making the Equestrian Trot 100 fandom music chart ten years ago. We've seen quite a bit of variety in the songs featured so far, and I've certainly discovered some forgotten gems among all the more famous tracks. I'd like to think there'll be more of those in this upper quarter of the chart, but we shall see! The usual reminder of my inclusion criteria follows:

Rule 1: Still available in the same or (1b) similar form direct from the/an original artist.
Rule 2: Available from a third party, with reason to believe the artist is fine with this.
Rule 3: So famous that it would be plain silly to leave it out.
Rule 4: Being unlisted is not, on its own, grounds for exclusion.

A rather more frustrating week this time, as I've had to skip a song for the first time in a while. Even more annoyingly, it was the very last track I reached for this edition. I looked around, but it wasn't officially available anywhere that I could find, and it wasn't famous enough for Rule 3 to be invoked. Sorry folks!

25: Vylet Pony ft. Strigidae – My Past is Not Today (remix)
24: SlyphStorm – Neverending Strife (redux cover)
23: PrinceWhateverer ft. Dreamchan – Awesome as I Wanna Be (extended cover)
22: oodorato2 – トワイライト Sunshine Remix
21: skipped

That's the intro stuff done with, so on we go to the music, what we have of it at least.

Rule 1: uploaded YouTube 15 Jun 2015
Okay, before I start, the video contains flashing images, so be aware if you're susceptible to those. Anyway, Vylet Pony needs very little introduction, as she's active in fandom music to this day. The vocals here, though, are by Strigidae, who has nothing on YouTube less than five years old. This is a pretty imaginative reworking of Sunset Shimmer's song, with Vylet's trademark unpredictability cutting in at times. Not least, it has to be said, by making Twilight rather than Sunset the focus this time. This remix isn't on Bandcamp, but it is on Vylet's Soundcloud, and there are 320k MP3 and M4A links in the video description.

Another artist who needs little introduction is SlyphStorm, and as that "redux" in the title might indicate, this wasn't his first cover of H8_Seed's original track. SlyphStorm made his first cover of this heavy-hitting track about Discord back in 2013, although it didn't make the "Sounds of 2013" chart. 693 days later, he released an updated version with more than a touch of the Eurobeat about it. This redux is most definitely an improvement, especially when it comes to the vocals. Another one that isn't available on Bandcamp, but at least there's a 320k link to an MP3 download in the video description.

Rules 1 and 4: Uploaded to YouTube 17 Nov 2014; unlisted
Yet another of PrinceWhateverer's collaborations with Dreamchan, with the latter providing the show cover vocals but Prince adding additional lyrics and the odd extra guitar solo. It was a rock song already, of course, so unsurprisingly the genre fits very well for this artist! Even with the extensions the track only runs to a few seconds over two minutes, but it's a pretty good listen – even if Dreamchan's voice is not really anything much like Rainbow Dash's. As is the case with many of these collaborations, even unlisted ones like this, the song remains officially available in HQ for £1 from PrinceWhateverer's Bandcamp.

Well, this one is a bit of an oddity. Not only is this track by Japanese musician oodorato2 three years old by the time it charted this highly (no idea why; used in a meme perhaps?) but it's not even one minute long! Given that it's simply a remix of the "Sunshine, sunshine, ladybugs awake" jingle from the S2 finale, it would probably be expecting too much for it to be any longer. Still strange, but cute-strange. That first word in the title means "Twilight", by the way. The track is available on the artist's Soundcloud, too.

  1. I instantly recognized this Sunshine Remix. There is PMV of it by TechPony that has 16M views as of today. Also I do not quite understand how music is placed on this list. Is it sorted by the views on YouTube?

    1. Aha, the TechPony PMV came out in March 2015, which explains why the song had a resurgence of popularity then. Thanks; mystery solved! :)

The chart is based on votes received by fans at the time. I'm not sure of the precise mechanism, as I think that changed a little over the years.
