Sounds of 2013, nos. 19 to 15
At long last, it's back! Into the top 20 we go, and with any luck this series might be finished by the end of 2020. As always, I'll be deciding whether to include a track by using several criteria. A refresher of the rules follows:
Rule 1: Still available in the same or (1b) similar form direct from the artist Rule 2: Available from a third party, with reason to believe the artist is fine with this Rule 3: So famous that it would be plain silly to leave it out Rule 4: Being unlisted is not, on its own, grounds for exclusion
This will be the last week with five songs, as I like to up the tension by slowing down towards the top of the chart! No skipping required today, I'm pleased to say.
19: Chief Doggingfood – Summer Sun Celebration 18:dBPony – Daddy Discord 17: Poni1Kenobi (feat. HardCopy and ShadyVox) – Button's Mom 16: dBPony – Wonderbolt 15: ShadyVox – Don't Mine at Night
As ever, there are YouTube embeds of the featured songs after the break, along with a few details about each one.
We start off this edition with a track that is simply fun from Chief Doggingfood. It's associated with a nicely old-fashioned PMV, which I recommend watching as you listen. It's entirely inspired by S1, and much of it actually from the premiere – although there are some CMC shenanigans that stem from "Stare Master" in there too. It's cheerful and upbeat and bouncy, with the sort of extensive dialogue sampling that was already becoming less common by the time this came out. As far as I know, there's no HQ download of this one.
This track can be a little confusing, as it has exactly the same name as Sand Josieph's 2012 hit but is a completely different song. This one by dBPony is a much, much heavier piece with a lot of screaming and a very fast, driving rhythm. Still, the song certainly has a great deal of energy and it does seem to capture some of Discord's wild force. A slower section namechecks The Living Tombstone, which is rather bizarre, as is the almost immediately following section of TLT's own "Discord" remix. There's even an intro by Screwball, who is voiced by none other than EileMonty. dBPony throws everything into this, and you have to admire that, though I'm not sure it would be top of my list for relaxing evening listening! 320k MP3 download link in the video description.
Top 20? Really? Oh, fandom... anyway, the musician now known simply as P1K is largely responsible for this. It's a parody of "Stacy's Mom" by Fountains of Wayne, with the Button of the title being the version of Button Mash seen in JanAnimations' Button's Adventures. I mean, without a doubt the original is a very catchy tune, with P1K and co adding really pretty well crafted ponified lyrics, and I certainly do remember some people in the fandom finding Button's mother... interesting back in 2013. But I can't help but find this (and indeed the FoW original) rather uncomfortable now. Still, if you don't then there's an MP3 link in the video descripton.
Here we have the seconddBPony track of this edition. As with the previous one, it's loud and raucous, but this time around it clicks with me a little better than "Daddy Discord" did. I suppose it's partly because it's a Rainbow Dash track, and Dashie is undoubtedly a hard-rocking sort of pony; perhaps also because this song's message seems a bit stronger. This may well be my favourite dBPony track, in fact. It also has the benefit of two big-name guest vocal talents in PrinceWhateverer and EileMonty (who voices Spitfire). There's an MP3 download linked from the video description.
To round off today's selection, here's ShadyVox's parodic take on... well, on another parody, actually. This is based on BebopVox's song, which is itself a parody of Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night". Concentrating now on the Pony version: this is written to star Button Mash and Sweetie Belle, with the former forever thwarted in his attempts to help Sweetie in Minecraft. There's some very cute family-friendly shipteasing, and the song is nicely sung. Mind you, a huge reason for this thing's popularity is the sensational show-style animation by JanAnimations. Unlike most of his MLP work, this one has been allowed to remain by Hasbro, and it's one of the fandom's masterpieces. Pick up an HQ version of the song for £1 on ShadyVox's Bandcamp.
I've never heard that first song before, but it is ineffably charming! :D
ReplyDeleteOh man, if Wonderbolt, one of the greatest pony rock songs ever written, came in at #16, the rest of this list had better be FUCKING AMAZING.
>Don't Mine at Night
Nope, flipping the list. >:B
"Don't Mine at Night" is wonderful, and I don't even care about Minecraft! :P
