Movie: Sia video down, TV ads up

If you grabbed a copy of Sia's video to her song for My Little Pony: The Movie, you're lucky – as the Vimeo upload, which was tweeted by Jayson Thiessen at one point and so appeared to be authorised, has now been zapped by Hasbro for copyright infringement. It is a pretty spoilery video, so I wouldn't be surprised if they wanted to keep it under wraps until after the movie's release. A bit late to hide it away from people now, though, guys. :P

On the other side of the coin, Lionsgate's playlist for the film has now added three 30-second TV spots. These have a few short sections that haven't been seen anywhere else, though they don't give away such major plot points as the Sia video does/did. I won't spoil anything here, but one thing that's notable about all these is that the animation looks really good – and yes, the problems from the first trailer do seem to have been ironed out.

All in all, it's looking like movie will be a visual treat even if it isn't anything else. Obviously I'm hoping it will be more than that, but frankly with animation like this I'd happily pay for a cinema ticket even if all that happened was a scene of various ponies bustling around Ponyville's market area.

  1. There were two bits of animation that really impressed me. As an old animator, I am not easily moved by the flashy stuff; that's the easy part. What's hard is subtlety.

The shot of Twilight landing behind Tempest does some lovely stuff with her wings and perfectly conveys her weight and motion. This is something even Disney animators will screw up at times. *cough*horsesinbeautyandthebeast*cough*

The other great bit was when Twilight turns to watch Sia flying overhead. You only see her from the chest up, but her subtle motion conveys everything going on with her body off-screen.

Honestly, it's superb work, and if they're doing that detailed and nuanced a job on the bits that most people won't even notice, the rest should be incredible!

    1. Nice insight; thanks! I've never been an animator of any sort, so I had to go back and watch those sections again, but with your comments in mind it was obvious. Very nice.
