Sounds of 2016, nos. 40 to 36
Although I've had to delay Ponyfic Roundup, "Sounds of 2016" is less time-consuming and so I've been able to give you this, albeit also a day or so late. Inclusion rules:
Rule 1: Still available in the same or (1b) similar form direct from the/an original artist. Rule 2: Available from a third party, with reason to believe the artist is fine with this. Rule 3: So famous that it would be plain silly to leave it out. Rule 4: Being unlisted is not, on its own, grounds for exclusion.
Last week I was able to feature all five songs – and happily, the same is true again this week! Huzzah! Here's the list:
40: JoinedTheHerd – Luna's Future (remix) 39: OhPonyBoy – Blob It 38: Aurelleah – Chromatica 37: Aviators – Chaos Theory 36: Notion – The Midnight in Me (remix)
All right, enough with the yattering and on with the music!
Rule 1: uploaded to YouTube 15 May 2016 We've been hearing quite a bit from JoinedTheHerd in this chart recently, so perhaps it's no surprise that he's back again now! "Luna's Future" was one of the most popular songs from "A Hearth's Warming Tail", and this time JTH has gone somewhat dubsteppier than usual. As regular readers will know, dubstep isn't my favourite genre, so this isn't my favourite JTH remix – but it's nicely produced, and there's enough in its orchestration for those of us who prefer other genres. Orchestral dubstep, as here, certainly appeals to me more than "pure" dubstep does. This song is a name-your-price download on JoinedTheHerd's Bandcamp.
At this point, what do I have left to say about OhPonyBoy, beyond my usual note that his enormous popularity from a decade ago hasn't lasted? This is another song from OPB's Blobs are Cute album, which has the usual mixture of electronic bloopery, quick vocal samples, a short duration and a dancey rhythm. Want this in HQ? You can pick it up for €1 on OhPonyBoy's Bandcamp, and there's an extended version available for the same price from the same source.
Rule 1: Uploaded to YouTube 5 Jan 2016 When it comes to Aurelleah's musical works, I usually gravitate towards the more traditionally melodic. Now this Rainbow Dash-themed track does have "melodic" in the genre name, but it's melodic electrostep, so we're talking a rather harsher, more staccato feel for much of the running time. There are some floaty orchestral parts between the more driving sections (the tune has no vocals, though it was originally planned to add them). The artist notes that this track was licensed for use in the game One Finger Death Punch 2, so I suppose it counts as stealth Pony for players of that! The tune costs $1 on Aurelleah's Bandcamp.
Aha, time for Aviators Corner! As you might have guessed from the title, "Chaos Theory" is a song about Discord. Not quite the show version of him, however. To quote the composer, it's "a dark look into a fictional Discord that became cold and evil due to rejection". And dark it certainly is, with lyrics like "Now I'm going to kill them all, except for one." (Aviators steps away from his more usual synthpop/synthwave and brings us almost seven minutes of symphonic rock. This excellent song, which is on the post-apocalyptically-themed Stargazers album, can be picked up for $1 on Aviators' Bandcamp.
By coincidence, we end this week as we ended last: with a remix by the artist better known as Sawtooth Waves. As with that song, this was removed from YouTube, so the embed above is from a third party, but as it does still exist on the artist's Bandcamp I can feature it today. This song is a remix of the Legend of Everfree song about Sci-Twi struggling to keep Midnight Sparkle contained within her. It's competent enough, though I think it lacks a bit of flair. As with last week's song by this artist, the easiest way to get hold of it is by downloading the Notion Remixes (Vol. 2) album on Sawtooth Waves' Bandcamp, which is available free (as opposed to name-your-price).
we must've been spoiled for Luna's Future remixes back in the day, because that's the only reason I can think of why JTH's isn't in my collection already!
