Sounds of 2015, nos. 15 to 11

You'll doubtless have noticed the lack of a "My Little Repeats" this week. I just haven't had the time, what with various things including the PoniesOnline virtual convention. I might have squeezed it in had it been a normal FiM episode, but as it's the Rollercoaster of Friendship special I thought it best to leave it for a little while. Don't worry, it'll be here before too long!

Back to music, and it's the last edition of this series before we get to the top ten. Exciting, eh! Oh, be like that then. I think it's exciting and it's my blog, so there. Here's the usual reminder of my inclusion criteria; for this week, Rule 3 is still not being automatically applied.

Rule 1: Still available in the same or (1b) similar form direct from the/an original artist.
Rule 2: Available from a third party, with reason to believe the artist is fine with this.
Rule 3: So famous that it would be plain silly to leave it out.
Rule 4: Being unlisted is not, on its own, grounds for exclusion.

Last week I managed to feature a full set of five tracks. This week, as happened fairly recently before, I got all the way to the end and then found I needed to skip. It's frustrating, but the track in question just wasn't famous enough for Rule 3. So, here's the list:

15: PrinceWhateverer – Frailty
14: Animated James – Winter's F***ed Up
13: µThunder & FritzyBeat – Sinking Ships (remix)
12: EileMonty & David Larsen – I am a Parasprite
11: skipped

There's your list of songs. Now to see what they actually sound like!

Yes, folks, it's yet another track from fandom hit machine PrinceWhateverer. This particular rock song is about Twilight, and specifically her recent (when the song was released) fight against Tirek in the S4 finale of FiM. It's not especially about the epic battle itself, though, but more about Twilight's need to conquer her inner demons even while fighting against the giant centaur. A lovely guitar intro leads into a fairly (but not excessively) hard rocker that has remained popular to this day. You can pick it up for £1 on PrinceWhateverer's Bandcamp, although many people nowadays may be more familiar with the 2016 redux (also £1) on the REINVENT album.

Oh. It's this. "Winter Wrap Up" with lyrics changed to include as much swearing as possible. I have a lot of time for some Animated James tracks, but not this one. I mean, it's quite clever in its way and including Nowacking and EileMonty in the team does make the music pretty decent. I'm just not someone who finds "Look how many times we can say 'fuck' in our parody" anything other than stupendously boring. If you're not like me, you can download it in HQ for $1 on Animated James' Bandcamp.

"Sinking Ships", originally by FiMFlamFilosophy, has maintained its popularity long after the abridged series where it originated, Rainbow Dash Presents, has to some extent faded into memory. This remix by µThunder and FritzyBeat is not one of the kind that makes the source song nearly unrecognisable. No: in this case it's almost worthy of being called a cover rather than a remix, although the added beats and synths do justify the "remix" title. The original was catchy, but this version doubles that. You can pick up this rather superior version of the song for €1 on µThunder's Bandcamp.

I was slightly – and pleasantly – surprised to find that this song was still featurable here, given that EileMonty's YouTube is now completely empty and the track is not on the still-active-ish-kinda David Larsen's channel. I'm glad it was on Bandcamp (of which more in a minute) as I'd have been sad to have had to skip this exceptionally silly song. Voice distortion, an unbearably catchy synth rhythm, and of course the worryingly cute parasprites themselves add up to a song that I always find puts a smile on my face. You can catch your own parasprites, if you want to risk it, for $1 on EileMonty's Bandcamp.

  1. oh hey, I apparently don't have it anymore but I definitely remember Frailty :)

oh god, anything but "Winter's Fucked Up", c'mon voters XD

now Sinking Ships, that is a real bop, and microThunder did a fantastic job with the remix :) RDP songs are generally pretty silly, not exactly great examples of songwriting, and the original is no different, but he was able to bring out what makes it an actually good song and amplify it into a clubfloor banger

    I have never heard I Am a Parasprite before, and I hope I never do again ._.;

and I am now dying to know what song could hit number 11 on a year list yet somehow be ineligible for feature 9 years later :O
