Back to the usual run of things now. Because this post is a day later than usual, and to space things out a little, Ponyfic Roundup will be on Friday this week. Today, though, it's time for "Sounds of 2015", in which we complete our look at the bottom half of the Equestrian Trot 100 music chart for that year. As usual, here's my summary of the inclusion criteria:
Rule 1: Still available in the same or (1b) similar form direct from the/an original artist.
Rule 2: Available from a third party, with reason to believe the artist is fine with this.
Rule 3: So famous that it would be plain silly to leave it out.
Rule 4: Being unlisted is not, on its own, grounds for exclusion.
Well, it was always likely to happen sooner or later. After a run of full houses, this week I've come across not one but two songs that I can't find still up anywhere officially connected with their artist. As such, I'm afraid they will have to be skipped. Here's what you are getting this time, though:
55: &I ft. Giggly Marina – Dive
54: skipped
53: FritzyBeat hugs PhonyBrony ft. Chi-chi – Hush Now
52: µThunder – Make This Castle a Home (remix)
51: skipped
All right, next up comes the bit you're actually interested in, to wit the songs! Even if there are only three of them today, let's set off at once.
Usernames starting with ampersands can be a nightmare to search for, but fortunately &I is relatively easily found thanks to the minor classic "Until the Sun", which you may remember from "Sounds of 2013". Meanwhile, "Dive" is a collab with Giggly Maria, whose vocals are just lovely. This is an upbeat, really quite sweet electronica song about Daring Do and her addiction to thrill-seeking and just, well diving in. Although it runs for more than six minutes, it doesn't feel overlong. You can pick it up in HQ as a name-your-price download on &I's Bandcamp.
Back in the early days of the fandom music scene, "hugs" was sometimes used in remixes or collabs as a deliberately friendlier version of "vs." or the like. By 2015 that was decidedly old-fandom, but with Japanese stalwart FritzyBeat riffing on PhonyBrony's 2012 take on a Season 1 song, why not? Add in vocals by the ever-reliable Chi-Chi and you've got a very atmospheric and somewhat ethereal song that I think feels appropriate for its subject: the one and only Fluttershy. I can't find it on Bandcamp, but both MP3 (sadly only 160kbps) and WAV versions are downloadable via links in the YouTube video description.
That awkward-to-type guy µThunder doesn't tend to need a lot of introduction, so here he is again. This time, our German friend brings us a very bouncy, smile-inducing remix of one of a song I really like from G5's "Castle Sweet Castle" episode. According to µThunder, this track was "very fun to make", and that word from the horse's mouth does not surprise me at all, since it's also very fun to listen to! Not on his Bandcamp (very little is, I'm afraid) but there are both MP3 and WAV download links in the description, plus you can listen to it on µThunder's Soundcloud.
