Ponyfic Roundup 312

Read it Later story count: 187 (-3)

I want Blogger to keep letting me use the old editing interface, but if it would stop giving me the option to "revert back" to that it would be appreciated. Department of Redundancy Department again. Anyway, I'm back up to three stories this week, which these days is probably something to cheer at. Unless you don't like PR, in which case why are you reading this? Anyway:

Killing Time by Prak
Loving the Nightmare by Penalt
But, I Don't Want To Become A Wonderbolt! by Deep

★: 0 | ★★: 1 | ★★★: 2 | ★★★★: 0 | ★★★★★: 0
Note: I use a skewed rating system. A fic I find average scores two stars.

Killing Time by Prak
Nightmare Moon
Comedy/Random; 3k words; Sep 2014; Everyone
After being banished, Nightmare Moon tries to keep herself entertained for the next thousand years. How many ways can she think of to play with rocks?
"What Luna/NM did in/on the Moon" fics aren't especially uncommon, but this is quite a fun example of the genre. For example, she gives us the benefit of her thoughts as to Celestia's decision to build a castle on the side of a mountain, and builds a dog out of Moon rock – one whose name is perfect. We even get some explanations, albeit silly explanations, for some of the unexplained stuff that goes on in the S1 premiere. I read somewhere that Prak's inspiration for the story was the way so many people interpret the canonical "in the Moon" as "on the Moon"; whether that's so or not, this is a fun bit of ridiculousness. ★★★

Loving the Nightmare by Penalt
Twilight and Nightmare Moon
[no genre tag]; 4k words; Jan 2017; Mature (Sex)
Twilight Sparkle returns to the alternate timeline ruled by Nightmare Moon to spy on it's ruler. Only to discover passion and desire.
It's not often I review an M-rated fic, but here we are. I said there was no genre tag, but you could make a case for [Dark]. Oh, there's a story here as well – it's not just clop – but it does earn that M rating. As the description above suggests, this is largely set in the dimension from the S5 finale where Nightmare Moon won. She's quite a compelling character, with both cruelty and allure in her make-up. Twilight's emotional development is maybe a bit too fast – the story could have done with being a few thousand words longer – but there are some interesting suggestions of where the power really lies here if you look for them. If you don't need your sex to be fluffy and gentle, this is all rather intriguing. ★★★

But, I Don't Want To Become A Wonderbolt! by Deep
Scootaloo and Rainbow Dash
Slice of Life; 2k words; Jan 2015; Everyone
Dash has never been happier now that Scootaloo has her wings and can finally start training for the Wonderbolts. Only problem is, Scootaloo has no intention of joining and now has to tell her sister the truth and risk disappointing her forever.
Can you see where this one is going? Unless you're very new to E-rated [Slice of Life] fics starring the honorary sisters, you probably can. That's its problem: there's very little here that surprises much at all. It's pleasant and fluffy enough, and here's some decent description of some flying tricks. Actually, there's not really too much wrong with the story. It's just that it's obvious pretty much from the word go what's going to happen. ★★
Next time on Ponyfic Roundup: stories reviewed should include The Descendant's Empty Nest.
