Sounds of 2012: Nos. 95 to 91

It's long past time I got back to Sounds of 2012, my look back at Everfree Radio's brony-voted Top 100 tracks from that year's fandom output. As before, whether I include a song or not will be guided by these four rules. I'll repeat the potted version of these; I may do that for every post, but I'm not promising anything. Here:

Rule 1: Still available in some form direct from the artist
Rule 2: Available from a third party, with reason to believe the artist is fine with this
Rule 3: So famous that it would be plain silly to leave it out
Rule 4: Being unlisted is not, on its own, grounds for exclusion

I'm bringing you five more tunes today! Here's what you'll see lower down this post:

95: TeiThePony – Twilight's New Stockings
94: Freewave – Balloons in my Basket (Freewave's Deep Thoughts Remix)
93: Whitetail – MLP Fighting is Magic – Pinkie Pie Theme
92: Pony1Kenobi – The Party Hasn't Ended
91: All Levels At Once – Go Take Flight

We begin today with a catchy bit of glitch, which according to the artist (still active outside the fandom as AcidUsagi) was originally intended as a collab with General Mumble. When nothing came of that, though, TeiThePony wrote this as a solo effort. I wouldn't say it quite measured up to the likes of Alex S, but I appreciated it all the same, what with its many samples from the show's first couple of seasons. ("Lesson Zero" especially.) The artwork for the video above is by none other than Dori-to, of Silly Lyra fame. Sadly, the song download links in the video description are no longer active.

FraGmentTd's original of this song was number six in the 2011 list, and this remix puts an EDM spin on it. Freewave (YT account name thefreewave) also says it's intended to have a slightly more bittersweet tone, though I must admit I found it fairly hard to decide about that. The singer has a pleasant enough voice, though. The video on YouTube is a pretty basic PMV; I doubt it'll hold the attention for very long. You can get hold of a higher-quality version by shelling out $3 for the album U+I on Freewave's Bandcamp. Rather unusually, the track isn't available on its own.

It's easy to forget now just what a big deal Fighting is Magic was back in 2012, or indeed how much of a blow it was when Hasbro issued their infamous C&D on the game the following year. Anyway, the artist now using the brand WhitetailMusic produced this suitably bouncy instrumental piece at just about the same time I was entering the fandom. It's all pink bubblegum perkiness, which is just what you'd expect, and there are a few samples of "The Laughter Song" to round things off. YouTube comments are "closed until the flame wars die down", but I have no idea what caused this long-ago bust-up. I can't find any HQ downloads.

This artist now goes by the shortened name P1K and is not only still around but will be playing at BronyCon this year! The song is inspired by a fic of the same name by ButterScotchSundae which I haven't read, though it's really old (first chapter posted on EqD in February 2011). Anyway, all this means that this is a PinkieDash song, done in a rather nice pop-rock style with some pleasant piano leavening the brash guitar. Talking of which, the guitar solo is by none other than Forest Rain! Want it in higher quality? Grab the 320k MP3 from the Mediafire link in the video description.

Back in 2012, there was a huge amount of love for the original Italian FiM theme. Sadly Italy switched to a simple translation of the usual theme after S1, but the unique version lasted long enough for All Levels At Once to release this synthtastic interpretation. It starts out in Italian, but swiftly switches to a surprisingly well-worked English song about the joys of sunshine, rainbows and of course friendship. This track appeared on the album The Pony Way, which ALAO have made available for free download. If you just want "Go Take Flight", there's a Mediafire link in the video description.

    1. I just went and read the first chapter of that story. it wasn't exactly good, but it wasn't as bad as that made me expect. I'm assuming it gets worse.
