With the US broadcast of "Sunset's Backstage Pass" (which yes, I'll try to get at least a mini-review of up this week), it appears that we're almost at the end of the road as far as the Equestria Girls sub-franchise is concerned. According to Nick Confalone, there will be no more specials – a season finale was planned but has been set aside, and there doesn't seem any real hope for a third season either. There are more shorts to come, but that would appear to be all.
Also in HumanHorseWorld, news of another background same-sex couple. It would be much better if these things could be right out in the open, of course, and it's right that people keep pressing for that. But I think it is progress to get to this point. Not enough progress, but progress nevertheless. Even so... I wonder whether G5 might finally take the plunge and give us some explicitly LGBT characters. If Arthur can do it, then so can My Little Pony.
Suffice to say, just because 'Sunset's Backstage Pass' is the last "special" it doesn't automatically mean the end of Equestria Girls. We may not know what the future holds for the series or if it's going to end, but we do know some material is on the way. Then again, I don't blame the account of why it's as ending as soon as FIM because in the beginning most fans didn't like 'Equestria Girls' and the High-School drama element was considered 'weak' and more of a cash-in on the popularity of 'Monster High'. But overtime, the series grew popular and more appreciated by the fans so it stands to reason why if they feel the series 'should' end it's story then it all the more deserves to end a big way (Like add a Graduation ceremony for example). Think of it this way: It took years before any more 'Star Wars' movies were developed after the original series, so who's to say we won't receive any more 'Equestria Girls' material even as much time passes?
ReplyDeleteWhile I think that's a fair point, I also think there's a huge potential sticking point: availability of the voice actors. Both with FiM and EqG, the VAs have been a huge part of MLP's appeal. I certainly would be much less excited about an EqG return if it had totally different VAs. For G5 it's not a problem, as that's going to be something new anyway.
DeleteWe certainly wouldn't want that to happen, considering the VAs have stuck to us like glue. Then again a few child characters would get replaced by one new child actor after another because they want to stick to a younger voice and all the others eventually grow up. Course, I wouldn't know if our leads in E.G. would keep their voices even if they reached 'college' age but if the event it 'does' happen I'd like to think it's symbolic of them growing up. Though I'd understand how difficult it would be for folks to accept because of an emotional attachment in some form. We'll just have to see how it all plays out in the end.
DeleteNow as far this whole LGBT deal (Particularly with this link), this wouldn't be the first time this was brought up on anything MLP related. When Scootaloo's Aunts first made their television appearance outside the comics (Albeit with 'slightly' altered animation), it's caused quite a stir amongst the fans featuring many who praised this introduction and others... Well, one of whom I'm not on speaking terms for some offensive remarks. Under the account that some more 'explicit' characters should be introduced, consider this: A guy and a girl don't need to say 'They are straight' when it comes to romance, it's all about the emotion, the actions that speak louder than words, and the moments that just allow the audience to translate it based on what they see. In the case of a same-sex couple, I think in a way they shouldn't be treated any differently just because there's a case of 'Man likes man' or 'woman likes woman' for me I always believe a 'Human being is a human being' regardless of who they 'choose' to love in this case (Although to be fair I thought those two guys in the link were either good friends or brothers, but I might be wrong). It all comes to prove that 'love' is not 'black-and-white', times are changing everyday and the species who survive are those who can adapt, roll with the punches, make do or do without.
Cancellation is like putting a series into the Purgatory, not Heaven or Hell. I'm really pissed off whenever writers or company cant even finish their goddamn stories properly, that's what I get for investing to a series driven by merchandise sales (no need to take the last part seriously, I just express my frustration). That why I never believe journey is more important than the destination, especially in TV shows/movies/fictions, finish the story properly! Let see how much luck FIM has compare to EQG.
ReplyDeleteAbout the LGBT, as long as they don't get in the way of the story that should be told, i'm fine with it. We already have Lyra and Bon Bon, their 'friendship' talks cant trick us anyway and we got Scootaloo's aunts. Good stories come first, injecting any ideology should be the your second priority. So far, G4 has done a decent job about LGBT representation. Should G5 take a big step even further? It's matter of the execution. Screaming 'IM GAY' in the screen wont help.
