I tend to at least skim through the "This Day in Pony History" series that Equestria Daily does to cover up the lack of new content remind us all of interesting happenings in the past. At the moment we're seeing some of the pre-release trailers and discussions regarding the first Equestria Girls film. It really is interesting to see just how vehement some people were that this was not only a bad idea but would utterly destroy the MLP fandom.
That was a decade ago, egad. But I wonder what those people think now, when Rainbow Rocks in particular is more fondly remembered than a fair chunk of Friendship is Magic episodes...
I no longer regularly read the EqD "Day in Pony History" posts myself, but they are quite an insight into what the past was like at the time for someone who didn't live through most of it (plus the odd 2018 post I do rememeber, or at least remember the context for).

It really is, isn't it? They do say timeheals all wounds, and least in the case of this, that is largely true. Most folks agree that first film is a whiffy, mediocre, processed, calculated effort. But you'll find few calling it a franchise-destroying effort.
On the other hand, time doesn't heal all wounds, as… other parts of G4 and the feelings on them nowadays can attest to. I'll say no more there, don't want to kick up a fuss.
I'm not a fan of EQG, but as for harming anyone's interest in G4? Hasbro wisely put an iron curtain around G4. All crossover events were strictly in the EQG series, and if anyone wanted to just pretend it didn't exist, that was entirely possible.
ReplyDeleteThe main elements I like about MLP G4 are the high fantasy setting, ubiquitous magic, sapient horses, all the cool monsters and creatures, and a scholarly introvert as the main character. EQD pretty much dumped all of that, and teen high school shenanigans utterly bore me, so there was only the MLP connection to interest me. I gave it a shot, watching the first three movies, but when the next one came out I just never got around to watching it. It felt like a chore, even given my completest tendencies.
Then I watched the horse-part of the cruise movie, actively disliked it, and that was that.
But seriously, whenever I remark that I just don't like EQG, so many people react like I'd kicked their baby. Of course various types of people will instantly hate me for not liking drag shows, American football, or whatever, so I guess that's a universal thing.
