UK PonycOnline, Merch Haul

It was a bit of a trial taking this outside on a windy day!
I have firmed up my opinion on UK PonycOnline. It is now, without a doubt, my  favourite online convention so far, just shading the also excellent PonyFest 2.0. I'm sure part of that is because of my happy history with the in-person UK PonyCons over the years. But it was also the event which I think felt most like a con – and part of the reason for that was that I came away with an, admittedly small, merch haul! Here's a key to the numbers on the pic:
1a to 1f: A6 postcard prints of the Mane Six and Spike, by Pearly Pie
2: Unexpected sketch of Spike, also by Pearly Pie, on the packing slip!
3: A6 marker pen original of Seapony Rainbow Dash, by StormBlaze
4: Print-it-yourself con badge of Britannia, by Sparkler
5: Official con T-shirt, via Redbubble, by Sparkler
6: Con mug (same design as the shirt), by Sparkler
For the sake of complete honesty, I bought the StormBlaze piece from her Etsy a few days later, but I did so because of UKPCO and so I consider it a con purchase. Not the biggest merch haul I've ever had, but for various reasons funds ended up being very tight at exactly the wrong moment. Given that, I'm pretty pleased – and, as I said above, even this little haul helped to contribute to that "actually a convention" feel that UKPCO managed to achieve. :)

My Little Reviews 45: "Putting Your Hoof Down"

It's often forgotten now that this short scene caused quite a stir back in 2012
S2E19: "Putting Your Hoof Down"
Written by Charlotte Fullerton
3 Mar 2012

My original rating: N/A
IMDB score: 7.0

The one with goats.

Thoughts: One of the odder Fluttershy episodes here, and one that's elicited very mixed responses from the fandom. One reason for this is Angel, who behaves worse here than in almost any other episode, to the point of actually hitting Fluttershy. Obviously this is beyond the pale, though I'm irritated by those fans who ever since have simplified Angel's character as though he was always like that. We'll see later this very season that he isn't. Anyway, another oddity is the market scene – this is one weird market, with all sorts of unPonyvillish features. The Equestrian economy still makes absolutely no sense, but at least we get a "Duck Season/Rabbit Season" gag. Rarity and Pinkie try to get Flutters to stand up for herself, with... mixed results. And then it's off to the Hedge Maze to meet Iron Will, to my mind one of the more likeable antagonists the series has had. Most of the "New Fluttershy" stuff is a bit tiresome if you ask me, and the infamous "flying feather" euphemism stands out. (It was noticeably never used again.) However, the ep becomes much more likeable after Flutters realises that she is becoming a monster. We even get an Easter egg: her sad walk back to her cottage is modelled on the Hulk's "Lonely Man", piano theme and all. The final section, in which Iron Will comes to collect his fee and 'Shy stands up to him, is great fun – Pinkie's cartoonishness helps, including the episode's second "Duck Season/Rabbit Season" nod, but Fluttershy herself is the star. A very mixed bag of an episode, sometimes a rather strange one, but I think one with more to like than to dislike.

Choice quote: Bon Bon: "Try one of your jokes out on me. I laugh at everything."

New rating: ★★★

Next up is "It's About Time", another episode I haven't watched for a long time. I recall its being in the "like, not love" category last time around.

Mini-reviews: Pony Life episodes 1 and 2

A good cross-section of the faces many viewers were probably making
Well, here we go. I don't intend to write full-length reviews for Pony Life episodes – what do you think this is, Friendship is Magic? – but I will try to get mini-reviews done. Unless I get unbearably bored/annoyed with the series, of course. After two episodes, I'm not there yet. I will put these behind a spoiler cut, though that may be being overly cautious.

Pony Life Art Director Q&A (via EqD)

It's been far too hot here for the last couple of days for me to go writing reviews, even short ones, so instead you get this. Equestria Daily recently highlighted that Pony Life Art Director Alex Vetter had been answering some questions on Twitter. Worth a read, though. A few nuggets: yes it's G4.5, yes it's an AU, no TTG! wasn't an influence, no Vetter can't say how many episodes there'll be. (Which suggests the 12 we know about will not be all we get.)

Ponyfic Roundup 300: Back to the roots

Read it Later story count: 203 (-4)

And now, a special edition! I considered a few options for this PR, but in the end I went with an idea suggested by several people over the years. I am reviewing one story for each of the Mane Six – plus Spike – with a little extra twist. Each of these fics tags only that character. Nopony else whatsoever. Seven fics in a single PR is a rare luxury these days, so here we go.

Mood Wings by Tchernobog [Twilight]
30,000 Feet by The Grey Pegasus [Rainbow]
The Life You're Given by neutralmilk [Applejack]
Fluttershy vs. Shower by Lise [Fluttershy]
Chess with Pinkie Pie by The Engineer Pony [Pinkie]
As Horns and Halos Surround You by Norm de Plume [Rarity]
Spike's Hoard by Shotoman [Spike]

★: 0 | ★★: 1 | ★★★: 4 | ★★★★: 2 | ★★★★★: 0
Note: I use a skewed rating system. A fic I find average scores two stars.

Sounds of 2013: Nos. 59 to 55

Quite a long gap since the last one of these, owing to UK PonycOnline and a few things unrelated to this blog. Still, let's get back into the swing of things now. Here are the four rules I use as my criteria for whether a song gets included here:

Rule 1: Still available in the same or (1b) similar form direct from the artist
Rule 2: Available from a third party, with reason to believe the artist is fine with this
Rule 3: So famous that it would be plain silly to leave it out
Rule 4: Being unlisted is not, on its own, grounds for exclusion

Now for this edition's list. I'm afraid I've had to skip two tracks this time, but at least three songs do remain. Here they are:

59: skipped
58: Silva Hound ft. Rina-chan – Hooves Up High (Assertive Fluttershy remix)
57: RainbowCrash88 – MLP Fighting is Magic - Fluttershy Stage Theme
56: BlackGryph0n and Baasik – RUN
55: skipped

As usual, you'll find embedded YouTube songs and a bit of waffle about each one after the page break.

What is the future for conventions?

I've seen Pony Life. I'll talk about it in a few days.

This is a subject I keep meaning to do a full musing/essay post on, but I never seem to have the time and the motivation simultaneously. I'll get there eventually, I'm sure! But for now, I'll just post the subject as an open question. When it's possible to have conventions in person again, whenever that may be, what will they be like? What might have to remain different in the longer term, and how might the online con experience feed through to physical events?

Forgot to mention this nice touch from UK PonycOnline

It's the little extra touches that make conventions memorable for the right reasons, and UK PonycOnline managed one last week. Above you see me, sporting the official con badge. Con badge? Why, yes! UKPCO provided a template for people to print and cut out at home. Very simple, yet it worked really, really nicely.

I know it's silly, but I made sure this was around my neck all the time while I was attending UKPCO events. Didn't want to be ejected from the venue, after all! ;) There was actually a paper lanyard to cut out as well, though I didn't bother with that as I just repurposed my 2018 lanyard. (And 2016 T-shirt, but that's obvious. :P )

We have a Pony Life trailer at last

Well. It's not Friendship is Magic, is it? But actually, I don't hate it. Really. I think the key is going to be accepting that it isn't the show we've known and (mostly) loved for the past decade, despite the presence of the regular G4 VAs. Celestia mentioning television would make that clear, even if all the rest didn't. Pony Life is clearly going to be fast, frantic and – hopefully – fun. Quite honestly, I might end up enjoying this.

Note that the video above is on Hasbro's channel but is unlisted. The same goes for the 30-second theme tune video that's also appeared. We'll see before too long whether the "Coming Summer 2020" caption on the main video, and the "funny side of friendship" line in both video descriptions, will actually come true in the end.

UK PonycOnline report

Ponyfic Roundup 300 has been delayed until next Wednesday. Don't worry, it's still on its way!

With the cancellation of October's regular UK PonyCon, the convention committee decided to join the online convention bandwagon, but give it a distinctively UKPC twist. Having a schedule that actually worked for our time zone was a novel experience, for a start! Right up here, I will say that I loved the convention and thought overall it was a major success. It's probably my favourite online con so far, just shading PonyFest 2.0.

Lots of detail past the cut!

My Little Repeats 44: "A Friend in Deed"

The costume is one thing, but actually gnawing through the tree takes Pinkie-level dedication
S2E18: "A Friend in Deed"
Written by Amy Keating Rogers
18 Feb 2012

My original rating: N/A
IMDB score: 8.2

The one with the Derpy snowglobe.

Thoughts: This is a wonderful episode... as far as the end of the "Smile" song. That isn't quite my favourite canon song, but it's way up there. I'll never get tired of it. Unfortunately, thereafter the episode goes downhill fast, largely because of the incredibly unappealing way Pinkie behaves. She repeatedly ignores Cranky's pleas for her to stop messing with his stuff, she won't leave him alone, she advertises his baldness to the town and eventually she destroys his most valuable possession. She's outright dislikeable, which is a horrible thing for this pony to be. For that reason, I just cannot enjoy this episode as a whole, even though Pinkie redeems herself at the end by finding Matilda for Cranky. There are nevertheless fun things herein, notably the "fuzzy felt" sequence and Rainbow reading a Daring Do book. We also get the first canon mention of hoofbumps – so I suppose it was here that "brohoof" began to retreat. It's also the first ep with dedicated end-credit music, albeit in this case just a piano arrangement of "Yankee Doodle" rather than anything new. Two stars is all I can give this overall, although "Smile" itself would be a clear five.

Choice quote: Cranky: "No, you're extra special, kid."

New rating: ★★

Next up is "Putting Your Hoof Down", generally seen as the worst Fluttershy episode of the early seasons. I haven't seen it for ages, but I have a grudge against it for something specific. You'll see.

UK PonycOnline con report coming soon!

I had such a good time at UK PonycOnline on Saturday that I've decided I'm going to write up an actual con report for this one in a day or two. For now, I'll merely say that it was in the very top rank of online conventions so far in enjoyment terms. Probably only PonyFest 2.0 matched it, and that had the disadvantage of being aimed at North American time zones. UKPCO was wonderful. Not without its little irritations, but those were far outweighed by the good stuff.

Since Fimfiction is down right now...

...it's quite likely that Ponyfic Roundup 300 will be delayed. If I'd been doing a normal PR, I could have reviewed a few fics from my printed books or something, but this one needs to wait until I have reliable access again. (I thought I'd downloaded everything I wanted, but I seem to have missed one or two stories.) If the server upgrade that they're taking advantage of the crash to do takes forever then I'll reassess, but for now I can only apologise.

In the meantime, I'll be at UK PonycOnline today, so do feel free to say hi in the Discord if you see me around. My username is Loganberry.

UK PonycOnline schedule up!

The UK PonycOnline virtual convention is this Saturday (13th June) and it's now got a schedule up! It may not be quite on the scale of PonyFest, but I'm still pleased with what we're getting. There will be two stages (Britannia and Starlight) with what at first glance seems a pretty solid collection of events and fun-ness. Yes, that's a word. I asked Pinkie Pie and she said it was.

Also now up is a vendor page, as well as a link to the Discord server; you can find the latter at the bottom of the convention's homepage. Plenty of channels in there – there's even a quiet channel, the UKPcO version of the physical convention's Quiet Room. :) I shall certainly be on there at times during the con, so please feel free to say hello! My screen name is Loganberry there too.

So, what appeals to me? Well, Archer's Quiz at 18:00 is a must! Elsewhere, there's an interesting-looking panel by Reskell on "Furries and the MLP Community", as well as Amethyst Shade talking about the fandom's social side. PrinceWhateverer is my favourite of the three musicians performing; Lavender Harmony and BassPon3 are the others. Oh, and there's PlushieCon of course!

It will be so nice to have a convention aimed squarely at the UK time zone, too. Events will run from 11 am to 11 pm BST, which means no need for us British fans to pull all-nighters in order to see something great. I'm much too old for con all-nighters in any case, even for streaming video. (Streaming will be done via Twitch, which is hardly going to come as any surprise!)

Now the schedule's up, I find to my delight that I am getting that familiar nervouscited feeling, one that's remarkably close to the one I've got in the past when UK PonyCon has been approaching. Those of us from our local meetup group are even planning a pre-meet to replace our usual Friday evening pub gathering. I am really looking forward to all this! :D

Ponyfic Roundup 299

Read it Later story count: 207 (-1)

Here goes with the final regular edition of Ponyfic Roundup before I reach the big three-oh-oh. If you're especially anxious to see what I'll be doing for PR 300... then you'll have to wait, as I'm keeping it a surprise! However, there's a small clue in the "Next time" text at the end. In the meantime, here are the three stories that I've been looking at this week.

My Little Reviews 43: "Hearts and Hooves Day"

Years and years ago, I had this scene printed onto a pencil case!
S2E17: "Hearts and Hooves Day"
Written by Meghan McCarthy
11 Feb 2012

My original rating: N/A
IMDB score: 7.8

The one with tubs of jelly.

Thoughts: The first mention of Equestria's Valentine's Day analogue and of Very Special Someponies (the "very" got dropped in later episodes). There are indeed several tiny dramas and tragedies to catch in the classroom in the scene after the credits. A filly on the near side seems about to give a card to a colt on the far side... and then Twist gets in first and the other filly looks away and drops her card on the floor. It lasts all of three seconds, yet it's heartbreaking. Cheerilee's face when asked about her (non-existent) Somepony is notable, too. A little later on, the episode gives us a nice song I feel is underrated – during which we see "Button Mash" for the first time as well as what looks like a Q*Bert reference with the hay bales. The ethics of love potions, er, poisons are maybe not given as much attention as they ought to be, but at least this episode gave us CheeriMac, one of the more fun fandom ships, and Peter New getting to talk a bit more as Big Mac. Admittedly most of what he says is of the "shmoopy-doo" variety! Not to mention a contender for Sweetie's best ever line; probably only "I really like her mane!" from "Lesson Zero" is quite as memorable. It's not the most exciting episode, but it's another pretty decent way to spend 22 minutes. A solid three stars from me; I like this rather more now than I used to.

Choice quote: Sweetie Belle: "Oh, come on!"

New rating: ★★★

Next up is "A Friend In Deed", which is a strange experience for me. I adore one part but rather dislike much of the rest. We shall see whether that remains the case.

I want to post something happier now...

...so how about some Scootalove? "To the Skies" is a new song from Sawtooth Waves (formerly The Brony Nation), with vocals by Chi-Chi – someone who will need no introduction and who's been contributing to the fandom for years. (See "Sounds of 2013", for a start!) The song, which deals with Scoot's feelings about being a ground-bound pegasus, is accompanied by an eye-catching video collaboration (see the video description for full credits). Together all this produces one of the nicest PMVs I've seen for a while. Its being about Best Filly doesn't hurt that impression one bit.

In which Logan rambles a lot

Have you ever read Jetfire2012's ponyfic It's a Dangerous Business, Going Out Your Door? Quite possibly you have, as it's long been considered one of the early classics. Indeed, I gave it a positive review years ago. If you go to the page I linked to now, though, you'll see that comments have been disabled. His profile has done the same thing. Why am I mentioning Jetfire2012 now? Because I'm semi-detached from the fandom as usual and didn't quite grasp that I should have talked about this earlier. Read on:

Here's a blog by Cynewulf, one of the fandom's outstanding authors. In it, she mentions that an image showing a person "chasing unarmed protestors with a bladed weapon before being forcibly disarmed" featured Jetfire2012. As the heroic disarmer? No. As the person with the weapon. Cynewulf's post is long and I don't want to do it injustice by summarising it glibly, but suffice to say here that she pinpoints 4chan's /pol/ board as a major root cause, especially the April Fool's Day joke where it was briefly merged with the /mlp/ board. Some in the comments and elsewhere consider this an oversimplification, I should note.

And here's a blog by MrNumbers, in which he talks about the Jetfire2012 incident, placing it in a wider context in the MLP fandom. In his words: "It's the hate and racism I saw emerge in support of him that's disgusted me." MrNumbers also mentions an incident where he contacted the Fimfiction staff over a PM and was told that he was trying to "shut down free speech". (For clarity, I'm not sure from context whether or not that was a direct quote from the staff member[s] in question.)

As an aside here, I have long had a problem with Fimfiction's tolerance of intolerable content. I've always tended to assume that my feelings at least in part have to do with the fact that I'm not from the US and so don't see free speech as the absolute good that many Americans do, some of those in a frankly creepy quasi-religious manner. Regular readers of this blog will know that foalcon is the thing I tend to get exercised about – I think it should be not only prohibited but a straight-up bannable offence – but that's not for this blog post.

So instead I'll move on to something relevant: here's FanOfMostEverything being absolutely furious. You don't see that every day, and when it happens you sit up and take notice of it. I'll hop back to MrNumbers now and note that he did make a follow-up post the following day in which he said (I paraphrase) that he felt heartened by how many people weren't ignoring that these problems existed, but rather that they did understand and so made active efforts to keep such things and such people out of their own personal communities.

Returning to Cynewulf's post, she makes the case that the "new normal" that seemed to be genuinely there to build in the early years of our fandom (perhaps up until about 2012) was not the normal that would reassert itself if we relaxed and did nothing, and that we as a fandom misunderstood that. To quote her again: "The 'normies' aren’t the SJWs you think are coming for your show and your fan art and your memes. The normies are the LARPers with Wehrmacht profile pics in your threads." And too many of us tolerated (if not loved) it. Too much and for too long. I am not innocent of this.

Is this fandom a good place? Well, of course there are plenty of places which are still true to the original, positive spirit of the fandom – stemming from the spirit of the show itself. Nobody is trying to say that there is not plenty of good to be found here. There certainly is. I wouldn't still be a part of it otherwise, and I don't intend to be leaving any time soon. But that's a different thing, and in any case "Is the fandom a good place?" is really not the correct question to be asking. The correct question is whether it's good enough. And the blunt answer to that question is no.

It doesn't take much in the way of guts to make a post on a small blog that few people read, but it's still been too much for me, apparently. Not good enough, Logan. Not good enough. So, long overdue though it is, let me say this very clearly: if you're a Nazi or a fascist or a sexist or a racist or a homophobe or a transphobe then get out of here. I want those people to be in no doubt: you are not welcome here. I do believe people can change. So go away and change. Change properly. Then we'll welcome you back with open arms. Then.

That is on you.

Cleaning up our fandom is on us.

Let's do this.

A somewhat minimal edition of Ponyfic Roundup today, I'm afraid. There should have been three stories in the mix, but one has been unpublished or deleted since I saw it, so we're down to two. They are:

A little big secret by Centurion-Pike

Sounds of 2013, Nos. 64 to 60

It's been a little longer than I'd have liked, but I'll take advantage of Ponyfic Roundup's short delay this week to fit in another Sounds of 2013 entry. Before I go any further, here's the usual reminder of the criteria I use to determine whether a song qualifies to be featured here:

Rule 1: Still available in the same or (1b) similar form direct from the artist
Rule 2: Available from a third party, with reason to believe the artist is fine with this
Rule 3: So famous that it would be plain silly to leave it out
Rule 4: Being unlisted is not, on its own, grounds for exclusion

Now for this edition's list. This time around I haven't had to skip a song, so here's the full run-down.

64: Aviators – Until the Sun (remix)
63: Canapplejack – Children of the Night (metal cover)
62: Synthis – Don't Get Lost (In the Everfree)
61: Assertive – Skybound
60: ThatSonofaMitch – Harvest of Dreams

Past the page break you'll find YouTube embeds and a bit of detail about each track.

June's Flashfic 150 contest is now open – all welcome!

Note: This week's Ponyfic Roundup will be a day or two late. This is because my neighbours are having a wasps' nest dealt with today, which means I have to a) keep my window shut on a hot day and b) reschedule some work stuff.

Now, back to Flashfic 150:

June's prompt is Dream a Little Dream.

For those of you who aren't aware of Flashfic 150 – which might have something to do with the fact that I rarely remember actually to mention the damn thing here – it's a monthly no-prize contest, in the Flashfic group on Fimfiction, that I've been running for a little over three years now. Your mission, should you etc, is to write a ponyfic in no more than 150 words, inspired by the prompt and conforming to all the usual Fimfiction rules except the minimum word count. (For that reason, entries are placed in a forum thread set up each month for the purpose.) You get three weeks to perfect your piece.

Then I judge the things. After I've read them, I hasten to add! I pick a winner, and if there are enough entries perhaps an honourable mention or two. The winner doesn't get any actual prizes, but they do get the chance to pick the following month's prompt. (They'll be ineligible to win again for that month, though they can still submit a story for fun.) Oh, and a mention on the group's front page, which I'm sure is absolutely thrilling for all concerned. It certainly is for me, as I founded the group so I'm always mentioned there anyway. :P

The number of entrants varies quite a bit, from as little as four up to 15 or so. It's not a huge group, so getting to double figures is nice. After the closing date (the 21st of each month), any group member is free to provide feedback on entries, and most times a couple of people do – sometimes in considerable detail, which may be the most useful part of the whole shebang. It all seems to more or less work, at any rate.

Anyway, if you're interested, please do join up and join in!
