Sounds of 2012: Nos. 48 to 44

Let's have a quick "Sounds of 2012" post today. Unfortunately I've had to skip two of the five tracks this time for not complying with the four rules I've set myself for determining inclusion or otherwise. That's made this a rather short edition, for which apologies. Still, at least we have some music to remember! Before I get on to the three tracks I can talk about here, have a reminder of the inclusion criteria:

Rule 1: Still available in the same or (1b) similar form direct from the artist
Rule 2: Available from a third party, with reason to believe the artist is fine with this
Rule 3: So famous that it would be plain silly to leave it out
Rule 4: Being unlisted is not, on its own, grounds for exclusion

47: Makkon – Deae Lunae
46: MLP:FiM Season 1-2 Medley
45: Aviators – Never Back Down (feat. d.notive and Yelling At Cats)
44: skipped

Come past the cut with me to find out a bit more about the tracks I didn't have to skip.

Makkon was quite a big deal in the early days of the fandom, though it's many years now since he made any Pony music, and his last YouTube upload of any kind was in 2015. Anyway, this song, whose title means "Goddess of the Moon", is apparently a remake of an earlier Makkon song. That was called "Luna Deos", and though linked to in the video description it's now private. This song, as its name implies, is a tribute to Princess Luna, done in the bombastic orchestral style that Makkon aficionados will be familiar with. The heavy use of a reworked show theme tune is something you probably wouldn't find in more modern fandom music, but I think it works very well here. There's a 320k MP3 download linked from the video description.

I know nothing about Kcirtap28 (read it backwards!), but clearly Everfree Radio's listeners seven years ago did! This is a bit of an oddity: a rather unevenly arranged mash-up of clips from the first two seasons of show songs. We get pretty much all the full-length songs referenced somewhere, sometimes two at once. Some of the transitions are rather awkward, and indeed by the time Kcirtap28 did a similar track for the first four seasons in 2014, things were considerably smoother. You can get a 320k MP3 via the video description.

Another collaboration between Aviators and the long-departed Yelling At Cats, but this time with contributions from d.notive, perhaps best known in the fandom for "Vicious Lies". This song, from the days when Daring Do was known only from "Read it and Weep", is a little bit harder-edged than some Aviators songs from this period. Even so, the the shimmering melodies are still there beneath the drums. The rap sections by (I assume) Yelling At Cats are not to my personal taste, but they do a job. You can grab this track in HQ formats as a free download on Aviators' Bandcamp.

    1. Nostalgia goggles, even in 2012? Just a guess.
