Sounds of 2016, nos. 10 to 6
I had a fantastic time at UK PonyCon. I'll be posting the usual multi-part con report in due course, but I wanted to get that out there first. Today, though, it's music time. We're almost at the sharp end of the Equestrian Trot 100 chart for 2016, so what will we find? Let's have a look...
Rule 1: Still available in the same or (1b) similar form direct from the/an original artist. Rule 2: Available from a third party, with reason to believe the artist is fine with this. Rule 3: So famous that it would be plain silly to leave it out. Rule 4: Being unlisted is not, on its own, grounds for exclusion.
We're into the top ten now, so Rule 3 applies across the board. Happily, though, it's not needed: all five of these songs qualify under Rule 1 in any case. Here's the list:
10: FritzyBeat ft. Sim Gretina – Neigh Anything 9: Sim Gretina – The Pony I Want to Be (remix) 8: Ink Rose & Baasik – Little Sunshine 7: TIX & The Pøssy Project – Ponyville 2016 6: Aoshi ft. Rina-chan – FluttERR
All right, for the penultimate time in this series, here we go!
Rule 1: uploaded to YouTube 12 Feb 2016 This week's collection begins with some electro-pop! FritzyBeat and Sim Gretina bring us a song about Cadance and Shining Armor. To be specific, it's inspired by the IDW comic arc which covered their high school romance. And in this song's case, "catchy" would be a bit of an understatement. I absolutely adore this track, and I'm very glad it placed so highly with voters. There's a 320k MP3 download link in the video description, but the song was later included on the Ponies at Dawn album Memories – and as that's a name-your-price affair, the album's Bandcamp page is the best place to pick up this song in HQ.
We're back with Sim Gretina again here, for an enormously popular (over 2m YouTube views) remix of Diamond Tiara's emotional song from "Crusaders of the Lost Mark". In this version the song is more upbeat and bouncy, but it still retains that essential sense of uncertainty and nervousness that characterises Daniel Ingram's original. Sadly the official SoundCloud release of this song has been deleted, but there's a third-party SoundCloud upload so all is not lost.
Rule 1: Re-uploaded to YouTube 24 Mar 2016 Another hit in the feels now from Ink Rose's beautiful vocals, accompanying music created by Baasik. This is intended to be a song with Celestia's mother, "the Empress", singing to her young daughter. And yes, there's a Luna section later on as well, along the same lines. If you know me, you'll know I'm an absolute sucker for a moving piano melody, and that's what we get here. The two-part structure means the song is a bit on the long side (6:44) but it's lovely all the same. No Bandcamp presence sadly, but there's a third-party SoundCloud upload.
Yes, this is thatTIX, as in the guy who represented Norway at Eurovision in 2021. I'm afraid I don't know who The Pøssy Project might be, however. Unsurprisingly, it's a cut above many Pony songs in the professionalism of its production and editing, and what you get is a fantastic dance-floor number. Yes, it's in Norwegian, but the full lyrics are in the video description so just feed them into Google Translate or something. As the man sings, "HORSES ARE LIFE ... HORSES ARE THE BEST". This is on Spotify, but sadly not on Bandcamp, while its SoundCloud upload is the premium "Go!" kind so not fully available without a subscription.
This glitch number by Aoshi with lyrics by Rina-chan is a very old song to come this high up the chart for 2016, but there's a pretty obvious reason for that: the Skill:Draw animation "FluttERR MLH" appeared in January 2016. That was so enormously popular (98 million views and counting) that I suspect some people don't even realise the song itself is two and a half years older. You can pick the song up on Bandcamp as part of the Four's Fall Down Rainbow & Rooted album, which is a free download.
ah, that first one is great! :D Fritzy and SimGretina, what a combo!
DOODA BEEDA :D
ooh, the rare Baasik and not-BlackGryph0n track! :O
it's so good that TIX got on here :D I didn't like his Eurovision song, but I was so proud of him for getting to that stage (also the rest of his Youtube output is straight bangers, if you like this song it's just the tip of the iceberg!)
okay, but I need to talk more about mid-2010's TIX, I'm pretty sure The Pøssy Project was just an moniker he used, not actually a separate musical act, but also he did what a lot of fan musicians have done, like Silva Hound or early Living Tombstone, chasing the latest fads and making songs that at least draw on the aesthetics or invoke the show, game, movie, what have you, without actually being a 'fan song'
just google those lyrics, this song is basically about being a horse girl? just that bit you translated, it's clear he's talking about horses, not ponies, he just slapped the image on the thumbnail to draw in crowds, and I'll tell you, I honestly don't blame him, like I said, everything he made around that time was a banger :D it's just such a weird way to make music is all
ooh, and "FluttERR" as the finale :D how cool, and how strange, I mean, it's such a sexually charged song, and those glitchy squeals in the breakdown are the kind of thing that would normally drive me off a song, but not in this case! I've always liked it!
