Sounds of 2016, nos. 30 to 26
Getting quite exciting now, isn't it? Remember, I don't know what's going to top this chart, so no spoilers please! I do however know what's in today's mix. As ever, here's the reminder of the inclusion criteria:
Rule 1: Still available in the same or (1b) similar form direct from the/an original artist. Rule 2: Available from a third party, with reason to believe the artist is fine with this. Rule 3: So famous that it would be plain silly to leave it out. Rule 4: Being unlisted is not, on its own, grounds for exclusion.
Here's today's list of songs. All five today! :D
30: JoinedTheHerd – The Pony I Want To Be (remix) 29: Animated James – Brony Polka 28: BassBeastJD – The Magic Inside (instrumental cover) 27: Silva Hound ft. BlackGryph0n – Egomania 26: JoinedTheHerd – The Magic Inside (remix)
And now on to the bit that I imagine most readers look at first!
Rule 1: uploaded to YouTube 12 Oct 2015 This version of Diamond Tiara's self-reflection number was released late in 2015, and so perhaps it's not surprising that it only crept into that year's chart at number 78. Another of JoinedTheHerd's extremely popular show song remixes, this one makes excellent use of vocal chops and has JTH's trademark upbeat vibe. It feels as though it's more a celebration than the version in the show, though I guess that makes sense as we all now know that DT is going to be reformed and ignored by Hasbro no I'm not letting that go before too long. This is a name-your-price tune on JoinedTheHerd's Bandcamp.
"What," you are doubtless asking, "is the no. 2 from 'Sounds of 2014' doing here?" Admittedly I think AnimatedJames' medley should have topped that chart, not Tombstone's... er... odd version of "Stop the Bats" – but that didn't stop me being confused. At least, I was until I realised that Viva Reverie's animation of the whole thing was released at the end of 2019 but had its first major WIP preview uploaded to YouTube in July 2016! Now, as to the song? Well, either you know it backwards already or you're new to the fandom, I expect. But it's basically a nine-minute Weird Al tribute, but with ponies. You can pick it up (just the audio!) for $1 on AnimatedJames' Bandcamp.
Rule 1: Re-uploaded to YouTube 5 Aug 2015 You may remember that BassBeastJCreached the thirties with this quite nice if rather strings-heavy instrumental cover of Lena Hall's song last year. Well, the same is true this year! I can't think of a great deal to say about this tune that I didn't say last time round, though it's worth reminding everyone that this was based on the SDCC preview of the episode. Yes, that's how a cover manages to pre-date the episode in which the original appears! If you want to pick it up in high quality, you can do so for $1 on BassBeastJC's Bandcamp.
A definite heavyweight collab here, with the incredibly durable Silva Hound providing the excellently packaged music and BlackGryph0n on vocal duties. According to Silva Hound, this song "is about wanting to be the best and doing what it takes to get there" even if that's sometimes seen as arrogance. Is it any wonder that Rainbow Dash provides the cover art for this one? ;) Expect hard-hitting beats and superb production values. It's available in HQ for $1.29 on Silva Hound's Bandcamp.
Ever get the feeling that "The Magic Inside" was a teensy-weensy bit popular in our fandom? I'm sure JoinedTheHerd did! Here's his interpretation of Rara's triumphant celebration of her true self, and you really couldn't imagine a song sounding like this being by anyone except JTH. The drums are maybe slightly more to the fore than in some of his tracks, but for the most part it follows the successful formula of melodies and instrumental breaks. This one is a name-your-price single on JoinedTheHerd's Bandcamp.
