Comic mini-review: Fiendship is Magic #2: Tirek
Next up in the Fiendship is Magic mini-series is Tirek, who probably sticks in most people's mind much more than Sombra has done. This is a comic that's interesting and frustrating in equal measure. Tony Fleecs' art is perhaps his best work yet in Pony, and Heather Breckel colours with aplomb as usual, but Christina Rice's story is... well, it's only half a story. We see the start of Tirek's tale, but at the end of the comic it feels like the really interesting part still lies before us. Also, was the name "Sendak" a reference? It really jumped out at me. The comic is fine as far as it goes; it just doesn't go far enough. Scrapes a ★★★.

Very average in my opinion. But it is interesting that Discord was in the crowd near the end of it.
ReplyDeleteI missed that the first time round! I stand by my rating: I'd place it above average, but only just. If only we had the full story!
DeleteI would have to agree with this review. The artwork and colouring is pretty impressive and I don't think I could fault that at all. The story though.. it could have been good, but I reached the end of the comic and my first thought was "is that it?" Okay, it told us that Tirek had a thirst for power, (which we knew already) and this was the beginning of it, but beyond that I can't really see any point to the story. It didn't really tell us anything much at all. Very disappointing to be honest.
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't in the same class as the Sombra issue, there's no doubt about that. And now I have to go and write a review for the Sirens comic. Clue: it's not a one-star or a five-star issue. :P
