Note: I use a skewed rating system. A fic I enjoy an average amount scores two stars.

Celestia and OC
G4; Comedy/Random/Human; 1k words; Sep 2014; Everyone
Princess Celestia is inexplicably in your bed.
Nice to have an E-rated story with this premise. It's slightly unusual, too, in that it's a Celestia-on-Earth fic. That's about it, really. The joke is mild but kept going fairly well, and the ending although incredibly clichéd does fit with the overall tone. The opening's obsession with Fanta is a bit weird, but this isn't too bad as a tea-break choice. High two, I think. ★★
Trixie's night by Neutron Alchemist
Luna and Trixie
G4; Slice of Life; 3k words; Dec 2014; Everyone
Having to spend a night in the wild, after having lost all that she had, Trixie is neverthless [sic] more tormented by her inner demons that from the rigors of nature. Luckily for her, in Equestria, nightmares have their jurisdiction.
I'm quite attracted by the idea here of Luna and Trixie interacting while the latter is out in the wilderness. The notion of the two outcasts (past and present) bonding is interesting. Sadly, there are only flashes of that here, and the lack of rally coherent structure badly hurts the story. There is more than one absolutely basic typo (eg "tought" for "thought") and the ending only makes sense if you work at it. A pity; this was an opportunity lost. Low two, mostly for the premise. ★★
A Letter to the Griffin Emperor on the Matter of War by Wages of Sin
Twilight
G4; Comedy/Slice of Life; 2k words; Apr 2014; Everyone
Twilight composes a letter detailing the reasons that war with Equestria is inadvisable.
The entire fic consists of that letter. In it, Twilight goes into great and very Twi-esque detail about exactly why the griffins are going to regret it if they push much further. As with many other enjoyable fics looking at Twi-logic, few of the details are much of a surprise, but they're set out in a way I could believe from the Princess. The gradual escalation is well handled, too, and by the end... well, spoilers of course, but it's a nice way to round off. I enjoyed this; a very solid three. ★★★
Requiem by The Sumareian
Celestia and OC
G4; Adventure/Sad; 2k words; Nov 2012; Teen
One must look to the future in order to protect the past.
In this fic, Celestia visits an archaeological dig. Although she engages with the workers in the way you'd expect, in her mind she thinks Sunshine. Who or what that refers to is the central point of the fic. It's not a bad notion, once you work out what it is, although reading time loop stories in 2025 gets a bit samey unless they have something startling, and this one doesn't. It's just too easy to see where it's going from halfway at the latest. ★★

Twilight and Celestia
G4; Slice of Life; 2k words; Mar 2013; Everyone
Twilight's ill, and shares a rare moment with her beloved princess
This is a "Celestia cares for Twilight and she cares back" story, of which there are many. But this one has a truly unusual basis – the illness from which Twi is suffering. I won't spoil it, but it's the kind of thing you couldn't imagine working outside Equestria, but which does work very well set there. It's a bit odd in that it feels like a Filly Twilight story but is definitely her as an adult – though maybe a young adult before S1 begins. Otherwise, this is just cute. Really cute. Top-end three and a warm fic in more ways than one. ★★★
Next time, I'll be bringing you a look at these stories – and I'd be astonished if you'd read all of them before!

Wow, those are some high ratings!
ReplyDeleteAh, they got revised downward on reposting. I was rather wondering what constituted a 10-star fic.
DeleteThat was weird. I do use those very high ratings as placeholders, since Blogger is less likely to mess up formatting when I delete some than add some. But I'd got the reviews written and it seems the site ate them during the publishing process. Oh well.
