Sounds of 2013: Nos. 95 to 90

It's Easter Monday, so here's a Bank Holiday treat – the next instalment of "Sounds of 2013"! Several people have mentioned to me that they consider 2013 to be the year for brony music, and I might well agree with them. Mind you, it was my first full year in the fandom, so perhaps I'm a bit biased there. Anyway, the usual inclusion rules apply:

Rule 1: Still available in the same or (1b) similar form direct from the artist
Rule 2: Available from a third party, with reason to believe the artist is fine with this
Rule 3: So famous that it would be plain silly to leave it out
Rule 4: Being unlisted is not, on its own, grounds for exclusion

Last time I was only able to feature four of the five tracks, as one didn't meet my criteria. This time? I had to skip two tracks! Oh no! But never fear: I compensated by adding another. So you still get four, at least.

95: Korw, EileMonty & GatoPaint – This Day Aria (remix)
94: skipped
93: Starborne ft. Forest Rain – Inspiration
92: Flaedr – Celestia's Ballad (remix)
91: skipped
90: ElectroKaplosion ft. ChiChi – Pinkie's Sugar Rush!

As usual, you'll need to come past the page break to see more.

Rule 1: uploaded to YouTube some time in 2012, reuploaded in 2017
We start out this time with Korw's remix of one of Friendship is Magic's most beloved songs. It was happily reuploaded on EileMonty's EileMontySingz account a few years back. As you'd expect from her, it's a very nicely sung version of the song, which for most of its running time is pretty fast-paced with just the right amount of bass and of GatoPaint's little guitar solos. Near the end, though, things take a slower, darker and more reflective tone that rounds off the song excellently. No HQ download I'm afraid, unless it happens to be around on one of EileMonty's higher Patreon tiers.

Well, here's a song from Starborne that I don't think I'd ever heard before doing this feature. Under 25,000 views, which might have something to do with that – perhaps surprising given it's a collaboration with none other than Forest Rain. Admittedly as a (fairly melodic) rap song, this isn't really my genre, but it's moderately pleasant to listen to even for me. The lyrics aren't in fact about Rarity, but are more of a general encouragement to the fandom not to be scared to get creative. The track is part of Cloudsdale Congress's Party in the Clouds album, which can be obtained on a name-your-price basis on CC's Bandcamp.

This remix of another fan-favourite show song, by Flaedr, is the kind where you get a melodic opening followed by a drop and wubs. You get the idea. Since that kind of thing isn't generally to my taste, I think I'd have preferred this without the wubbiness, but then it would have been an entirely different song, rather than the drum and bass remix it is. I like the start and ending a good deal, though. Flaedr hasn't been active for many years now, but the Mediafire links in the video description will still bring you 320k MP3 or WAV downloads.

Unlike many brony artists from long ago, ElectroKaplosion remains musically active, although they haven't produced a Pony track since a remix of Sia's Rainbow back in late 2017. "Pinkie's Sugar Rush!" sounds pretty much as you'd expect a song with that title to: it's basically bubblegum electronica. It's cheerful and bouncy and could easily be a Nintendo game theme. The vocals are by ChiChi (now known as Chi-chi) and continue the cute, slightly distorted theme. There's a 320k MP3 download link in the video description.

  1. The last one is the only one of these I've heard before, but I've always loved it. Also always gotten it mixed up with the "Sugar Rush" song from Wreck-It Ralph. <.< Like, I always thought this was a cover or something.

The rest are... fine, I guess. :B

    1. Your confusion is entirely understandable, since ElectroKaplosion's track is in fact the theme for ToucanLDM's Wreck-It Ralph meets My Little Pony video!

    2. Didn't sound familiar, so I was gonna say I'd never seen it until now.

Apparently, I downvoted it though. c.c Likely back when it came out. That is RARE, I hardly ever downvote on Youtube.

  2. These are all new to me unfortunately. Out of the 4, only Pinkie's Sugar Rush is something I'd really want to put on again for pleasure. Partly for the cheery feel, and also because I like Chi-Chi's work.

It always amazes me how prolific EilyMonty is within the fandom's music.

    1. I'd never heard of the Pinkie one, and I wasn't familiar with any of the four. The next instalment of this series has a couple I know, though the really famous 2013 songs will have to wait a while yet. They're coming, though. :)

And yes, she certainly is. Good job she's also very good at it, then!
