What? "Equestria Girls (Extended Hub Promo Edition)"

Why? It's hard to remember now, but up until early 2013, if you said "Equestria Girls" to someone, it wouldn't conjure up images of oddly-proportioned humans in a dimension beyond a magical mirror. Instead, this is where people's minds would go. The Hub (later Hub Network) was famous for its creativity in promoting Pony, to a degree that makes Discovery Family's "Game of Thrones" Season Six trailer look very basic indeed. And one of their most fondly remembered promos was this fabulous take-off of Katy Perry's "California Gurls", a song that was pretty hard to avoid back in 2011. Yes, it's really a PMV, but I think the song itself is enjoyable enough for it to be featured in the PML.
I may be wrong, but this was pretty much the first MLP related thing I saw. And it's kind of strange that at the time, I knew so little about the show and couldn't even have named the Mane Six. But even just this short video was enough to make me realise it was something pretty special, and therefore that video is something that will always be special for me. :)

ReplyDeleteAnd don't forget, this was the first instance of fan names/terms (DJ PON-3, bronies) making its way into... well, something official, if not necessarily canon. Many freakouts were had, that the people writing the commercials knew who "we" were, and were tacitly acknowledging us.
ReplyDeleteBefore my time, but I knew it was the first time bronies were mentioned like this. I'd forgotten the same was the case for DJ... a name I still don't much like, even as a stage moniker. :P
