Ponyfic Roundup 562

Read it Later story count: 91 (+1)

Words read this week: 10,335

Back to the more common format of five short stories this week. The total word count is very low, which is fortunate as I've had a lot going on. Nothing especially thrilling, just time-consuming! Anyway, here's today's list:

Hey Jealousy by Ruirik
Luna takes a shower by LittleAngelStocking
Trixie defeats the entire Legion of Doom in a Waffle House. [sic] by TheMajorTechie
A Break in Apple Bucking Season by RenaissanceBrony
Diary of a Time Looper by Kodeake

★: 0 | ★★: 1 | ★★★: 4 | ★★★★: 0 | ★★★★★: 0
Note: I use a skewed rating system. A fic I enjoy an average amount scores two stars.

Hey Jealousy by Ruirik
Lightning Dust and Rainbow Dash

G4; Slice of Life; 3k words; June 2015; Everyone

After being expelled from the Wonderbolts Academy, Lightning Dust traveled around Equestria in search of herself. Then, many years later, after a hard day of working she went to a bar and ran into the last pony she ever expected to meet again.

Several years after the events of "Wonderbolts Academy", Lightning Dust sits in a bar in Manehattan. Then, who should walk in but her own nemesis. Dust hopes Rainbow won't strike up conversation, but no such luck. Lightning, who narrates, tells us what happened and where she is now. That's the part I find the most satisfying here: if you're fearing yet another "Lightning Dust is a total failure" fic, then this isn't it. It loses momentum slightly near the end, but it's well worth a read. High three. ★★★

Luna takes a shower by LittleAngelStocking
Luna and Celestia

G4; Comedy/Random; 1k words; Sep 2012; Everyone

Princess Luna is new to showers, but such a thing could never best her... or could they?

We're back to classic old-fandom territory here, with one of the huge number of "Returning Luna struggles with modern technology" stories we used to see. This one is quite likeable, and I did giggle a couple of times. It's nothing remarkable, though, and there are too many irritating technical errors. ★★

Trixie defeats the entire Legion of Doom in a Waffle House. [sic] by TheMajorTechie
Trixie, Sombra, Cozy Glow, Tirek and Mane Six

G4; Comedy/Random; 2k words; Dec 2025; Everyone

In her defense, it was either that or *gasp* close the Waffle House.

What. I should probably stop the review there, but in the interests of actually doing some work... this fic is what it sounds like. Apparently Waffle House is a real chain, not to be confused with The Waffle House. There's lots of Trixie here, and for whatever reason Sombra is a cube. As in a cube, yes. I have no idea what's happening and I'm sure I'm missing various memetastic references (surely "shrimply" is one?) but it's so determined to be ridiculous that I can't help a sneaking liking for it. ★★★

A Break in Apple Bucking Season by RenaissanceBrony
Applejack, Apple Bloom, Big Mac and Granny Smith

G4; genres; 1k words; Apr 2014; Everyone

The Apple family decides to take a break from harvesting fruit to spend a quiet day inside.

That shortdesc tells you most of what you need to know. This is the slice-of-life-est kind of slice-of-life, where you really do just spend a relatively relaxed spell with the ponies. The Apple Family lend themselves well to this, and Applejack's narration is shot through with love for her family. The household feels real, right down to the in-jokes and silly comments that most of us will recognise in spirit if not in detail. Simple and sweet; a very solid three. ★★★

Diary of a Time Looper by Kodeake
Twilight

G4; Dark/Tragedy; 3k words; May 2019; Teen (Suicide/Self-Harm)

My name is Twilight Sparkle, and for the last 33 days I've been stuck in a time-loop, repeating the 23rd of March, 2 A.R.

In this case, Twilight knows about the daily resetting but nobody else does. Even when she told Celestia and Luna, they didn't fully understand. The story is told in journal format, and for once strikeouts aren't simply there for plot convenience. This does sound like Twi, and you do very much feel for her as she goes round and round... at least until, well, spoilers. There's one thing she doesn't try that confuses me, but that aside this is a satisfying read. ★★★

Another five quickies for next week. They'll be as follows:

Caught by Apple by Borsuq
Wedding Night by paxtofetter
Skies Over Equestria by xScootalooGamer
Part of a balanced breakfast by Hesitant Brony
Airship Down by The Lunar Samurai

  1. Waffle House is indeed a chain, sort of a more lowbrow (if that's possible) IHOP. I don't know how national it is, but we have them all throughout the southeast. I think many of them are open 24 hours, and the main joke about them is that if you see a report of a late-night fight on the news, it was probably at a Waffle House.

  2. Oh, and I completely forgot to chime in that I've read Ruirik's story. I had pretty much the same reaction you did. Solid story.
